I'm concerned that the actual scale of infection here is being masked by the fact that many people aren't being tested because they're being turned away for not meeting some very restrictive entry criteria that seems to assume that community transmission wouldn't be rife by now. I understand why choices like that are made to flooding facilities and increasing infection possibilities, but given how easily this appears to spread the strict criteria didn't seem suitable to me.

Reading various reports about half arsed measures by ineffective leaders and general complacency in the population, i fear we'll go much closer than is comfortable. I hope i'm wrong. :(

We've now gone in to 80% lockdown.
All social places are now shut (pubs, cafes, bars, gyms, leisure centres). Most businesses are working from home, running on reduced staff working shifts or have stopped.

The supermarkets are still a bit mad but it's getting slightly better.

Be interesting to see how this affects the number of cases.

But having 'seen' how bad my brother has been with it, don't take it lightly. I can see why people over 70 are dying. It saps all of the energy out of you.

Just locally, yesterday we had a pub/nightclub advertising that they were still open as they had 5 rooms which could each hold 100 people, satisfying the government restrictions. When you have that kind of attitude, it's only a matter of time. :(

South Australia has been doing okay to date, but we're just starting to see an upswing in cases. Given attitudes like the above, I hope that we see decisive action taken before it becomes an uncontrolled spread, since apparently we can't be trusted just to do the right thing.

Looks like a pretty sharp incline to me. If the current measures are working to slow it we will see that take effect next week but the current rate is pretty fast.

EDIT: also if you check the transmission sources, it would appear that the local transmission has taken over majority of cases. As far as I can work out, if it's under investigation it obviously isn't from overseas travel. "Have you been overseas?" "No" Hmm it MIGHT be from travel....

It is getting serious now. The states seem to be taking more action than the federal government, which is absolutely no surprise.

Stay safe guys.

I think the Italian lesson lit a fire under the state governments. The Italians went the lockdown route and it would seem that if that was the right thing to do, then they waited too long.

If you like your gin and tonics like I do, get that tonic quick! People already suggesting quinine will help cure the virus FFS.

Someone needs to get on Facebook and tell them that having a wank cures it. It'll calm a lot of people down at least.

There is some suggestion coming out that smoking might be a major contributor to the mortality rate being experienced in some countries; Italy has a smoking prevalence of 28.3% (Australia has 16.7%).
https://www.quit.org.au/articles/faqs-coronavirus-covid-19-and-smoking/ wrote:While there isn’t enough evidence to be certain that people who smoke are more likely to be infected by COVID-19, we know that they are at a higher risk of getting lung and chest infections in general. This means that it’s more likely than not that people who smoke have a higher risk of getting COVID-19 compared to people who don’t smoke.

There is growing evidence to suggest that people who smoke are likely to be more severely impacted by COVID-19 if they do become infected, because smoking damages the lungs so that they don’t work as well. For example, lungs naturally produce mucus, but people who smoke have more and thicker mucus that is hard to clean out of the lungs. This mucus clogs the lungs and is prone to becoming infected. Smoking also affects the immune system, making it harder to fight infection.
So, the message seems clear, if you still smoke NOW IS THE TIME TO QUIT - URGENTLY!!!!!

Me and some mates had a Zoom night in which worked really well. 4 way video conference get together. We're thinking of doing games nights too. Someone can have trivial Pursuit set up and ask the questions and roll the dice etc. We're also thinking of a quiz night where people can be put in to teams on Zoom so they can discuss answers without the other teams knowing what they're saying.

I'm working on a playlist for the music round.
Police - Don't stand so close to me
Rosberg the legend Spears - Toxic
Fun Boy Three - Ghost Town
etc etc :D

Sounds like my sister-in-law might have had it although with mild symptoms. She isn't sure whether it was just a chest infection, but her fella's just developed a cough today apparently... :(

We took the dog out down the canal yesterday and, going from the number of cars parked there were 3-4 times more people than usual out for a walk.

I was already intending to get back into sim-racing this year so this makes me think I can factor in the increased necessity for virtual socialising in my man-maths now :D

I was in Victoria for a wedding over the weekend. It barely went ahead and had so many hurdles with all the changes during the week.

Border controls in place are for 14 days isolation immediately. They’re actively policing the borders from Tuesday into SA.

I find this kinda funny because I'm really not a social person, social distancing is virtually my default state :p

I'm getting ready to head bush later this week for work, we've had to get a special exemption to enter the community but given the situation it could all change quickly. The NT being remote we're avoiding a lot of it, only 5 confirmed cases so far, the border will be "closed" tomorrow and we're joining the shutdown of public venues with the rest of Aus so that should help minimise the outbreak here when it finally happens.

Some time off work would be nice, spending most of the days sim racing but really I need to be doing as much work as possible while I still can to keep the business ticking over.

My hospital is getting hit pretty hard with sick leave. People are keeping their kids home and are staying home with them, the knockon effect gathering steam..

This is precisely why the federal government was pushing to keep children in schools - because the obvious consequence of children being kept home is that parents need to stay home to look after them... including parents working in healthcare.

My wife works as a teacher's aid and she was surprised that they're finishing school this week because as she said they're also baby sitters. A lot of parents just can't get time off. We're in a working class area where is common for both parents to work.
