Orympic games

Post by Nigel »

Might as well start a thread about it now. I Have the feeling that the games might just be a bit of a fizzer. I am sure the athletes will do their best, but the environment seems to be shooting itself in the foot and has done since the torch relay. Now Australia will be almost last in the team announcements as the Chinese have decided to spell it differently. The order of the nations was being dictated by the number of Chinese strokes in the first syllable of each nation in Mandarin. Australia is pronounced Aodaliya in Mandarin and the character Ao has 14 strokes. No one bothered to inform the athletes of this so a lot of the athletes who were going to walk wont now.

SBS will again have all the good sports coverage (you know, those not about swimming) and will actually show some of the sport rather than 2 seconds of world stuff before going back to the 23 hour coverage of Gymnastics and Swimming that Channel 7 will be broadcasting. Sadly, 7 has the veledrome, so those that like cycling will more than likely get the last 2 minutes of action from the bike races.

Coverage of the last games was pretty shithouse. I couldn't give a tinkers about the swimming, so I hope they use their extra digital channels to show more stuff. Might see some events worth watching then. Surely Bruce can't be on all of them simultaneously either :)

To the athletes choosing to not walk in the opening anthem due to the order of appearance, they can go fuck themselves! Is this true!? Some people need to realise that there is more than one language in this world. Besides, there are more native Chinese speakers than native English speakers by a long shot.

Also, channel 7 have had 4 of their channels broadcasting for the past 5 years... about time they use them! Something tells me they wont, or it wont be of any worth. In any case, I'd rather have one proper 1080i HD channel than 4 shit quality feeds.

I think the reason for people not marching is because it means they will be out much later than had they gone up the front. I don't think it's them saying, screw you, if they can't go first, I think it's more that it will hurt preparation. That's the way I understand it anyway.

id say thats correct.. and while most can sit back and say 'harden the f**k up and get out there with your countrymen'.. they probably also havent trained for anything before.. hell i only ever used to train for state, and there would be no way id be having a late night. You have to understand some of these guys have been working towards this for years of their life.. hard f-ing work.. nothing personal but i wouldnt be out there marching around late into the night with a flag waving at randoms if i had made it that far.

all good :D

by the way I've just come through Beijing on my way back from Europe. I've spent a day there, and I must say I would not send athletes or any other sportsmen there. The air is thicker than shit, and smells like it too. I wonder how they got the approval from the olympic committee or whatever board allowed this to happen...

I think most people knew it was a stupid bloody decision to have the games there when they announced it all those moons ago. It really looks like it could be the worst games ever

So the air is so bad you can't even cook outdoors. Better shut down a couple more factories.

I wonder how many marathon runners will keel over and die during their race.

Just call it Peking.
- When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that individual is crazy.

Shame channel 7 got back the commentary feed. I was actually finding the opening ceremony watchable without the usual crapping on over the top.

Shame also that they put ads in a live performance. It should be noted that they didn't cut the commercial when the athletes marched.

SBS has the cycling on today from 1pm - 7pm. Cadel is racing in that one.
