Best thing about the olympics for me is its forcing Ch7 to show the footy live instead of their usual BS 2-4 hour delays! Loving it. Pity bruce is in china and cant commentate em though :)

hmm...ill just repeat what i said before. Fantastic opening ceremony! Huge effort!. re: Smog, currently the thick haze you see is not smog, but rather, well, haze. Due to the high humidity the air is very dense, which is why visibility is low. This is similar to melbourne when we had many days of fog and the wind wasn't around to blow the fog away. However, this is not to say BeiJing has a pollution problem.

also, i think it should be BeiJing as it is spelt in pinyin. Peking is rather a romanised version of the name.

I hope you got something wrong in that sentence Spoon. I have a mate over there who is asthmatic and it is killing him. Some of the shots I have seen arent what you would call clean air.

Perhaps I fell asleep somewhere. But did the light the cauldron ? I don't remember seeing it at all. I don't even rememeber the flame coming into the stadium.

yeah i was supposed to say This is not to say BeiJing does not have a pollution problem. I remember going there in 2005 and feeling the place being quite s'house. Shanghai was much better in terms of air quality.

Haven't seen a minute of this new games, keep forgetting its on lol

Probably because during school we were forced to write articles about the olympics each night for homework, now my personal care factor for it is 0, bit of a tip for current parents if you want your kids to follow sports / athletics, don't force them to watch it lol

Might watch the closing ceremony though, kinda wish I seen the opening one but yeah had nfi it was even on

Was very impressive. I liked the drummers and the printing press thing.

I just know ours in 2012 is gonna be shit. We haven't even started building it yet. At this rate the first event will be brick laying.

Just provide a 1 hours lecture on how to steal car stereos and hubcaps off French cars and you'll have the whole nation enthralled. :aussie:

Two quick comments - it takes 4 years to forget just how bad the commentary usually is. Bibi and i have taken to turning the sound right down - and how sentimental and awful are the ads during the Olympics? God, they are making me spew up into my mouth! It's only been a few days and I can't take any more of them!

Interesting read.
US swimmer Michael Phelps made history yesterday when he scooped a record-breaking 11th Olympic gold medal. He has now topped the podium five times in Beijing. After his latest victory, he revealed the secret behind his six-days-a-week, five-hours-a-day training regime: an extraordinary 12,000-calorie daily diet, six times the intake of a normal adult male. This is a typical day:

Breakfast

Phelps kick starts his day and his metabolism with three fried-egg sandwiches, but with a few customised additions: cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and, of course, mayonnaise.

Amuse-bouche out of the way, he throws back two cups of coffee and sits down to an omelette - containing five eggs - and a bowl of grits, a porridge of coarsely ground corn. He's not finished yet. Bring on the three slices of French toast, with powdered sugar on top to make sure there's no skimping on the calories. And to finish: three chocolate chip pancakes.

Lunch

With breakfast wearing off and the hunger pangs biting, Phelps downs half a kilogram - ie a whole packet - of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches. On white bread with loads of mayo on top. To remove any chance that his body will run out of fuel, he washes this down with about 1,000 calories of energy drink.

Dinner

Time to load up on carbs for the next day's training. Another half kilo of enriched pasta goes down the hatch with a chaser of an entire pizza and another 1,000 calories of energy drinks. And so to bed. As Phelps told US television channel NBC yesterday: "Eat sleep and swim, that's all I can do."
