Its crazy how much the price of Commondores drop, a vx ss would have been what close to 50 new, now you can only get 13?

My car was 40k, and I can still get 23-25 easy.. same year model

Older ones yeah. They're starting to ease the slide now. Check out how much a Fairlane or Statesman drops - the depreciation on those is phenomenal.

cos there's a million holdens and fords out there and they update them every 18-24 months so even a fairly newish one is considered old.

Also because they are generally corporate / fleet cars, so a lot of them are turned over quickly with high mileage which drags down their values.

that's why you don't buy new, unless you got that much you don't care about it

I have a joke for you. I have a prediction that you are going to walk into a bar, my prediction was wrong and your wallet is gone.

I'm sorry but that's how much? About 5% of the total price, right? I'm sure I can haggle that much off of any new car's price without even really trying.
You need money to burn to buy new cars.

on depreciation though:
I've bought my 1.5 yo Mitsu 380 for $18,000 - 34K on the clock.
( The new price of the car was near $40,000 - SX model )

That was a year ago.

The car nowadays seems to sell for around - guess what, the same, and even above (with the low kilometers)
:D
Surprise, no sig. Now there is. Or is there?

Yeah, you would have bought one at just the right time. The bottom fell out after the Mitsu plant closure but after a bit people started realising just what a good second hand buy they are.

I've been looking at them for months before, I had an xcel sheet with the price movements of each model :) I was hoping the financial crisis will bring the price down - and it did but only a tiny bit.
I'd like to say it was my genius but really, it was just good fortune that we went to take a closer look and decided to buy when we did.

In hindsight the cisis is a great time to buy things. Everything is cheaper, subsidized etc...
Can't wait for the next one :D

Yep, but they sold heaps of cars. I was tempted but held off as it only applied to new cars & there are lots of good pickings in the second hand market. Also the tax rebate put a false floor under the new car market & we are now seeing some good prices / extras added etc by the manufacturers to keep the sales going.

5% tariff drop would be helping there too, Macca. And yeah - the used car market is seeing some massive bargains right now as it has been flooded by all those poeple trading in last year.
