New gateway/server PC.
Well after a good 7 years, with it hardly ever being off, the good old Linux server finally died this arvo. Fingers crossed it didnt take the old hard drives out with it.
So anyone got any recommendations as to a replacement?
I dont need grunt. This was some crappy old Athlon and 256meg of RAM. I would like to get something that has SATA and IDE ports on it if at all possible. Also, dual LAN ports would be great. Apart from that, it doesn't need any bells and whistles.
It galls me to even think about it, but could I grab something at Harvey Norman or Officeworks? Be nice for it to be running by Tuesday so the bride can work at home this week.
Thanks gents.

Re: New gateway/server PC.
any thing low end from one of the above would do more then the old one, only standard upgrade would be memory. only thing to look at would be the Sata/IDE ports on them.
or you could get any of the many old pc's floating around and give new life.

Re: New gateway/server PC.
Do you really need a server to share internet?
Why not just a router and some storage? Some routers have USB ports for storage..

Copying anything via USB is shite. Would rather a low end PC with LInux any day over a router and USB Pix.pixelboy wrote:Do you really need a server to share internet?

Re: New gateway/server PC.
I think that's the case, indeed. But it really depends what do you compare to what, if you can get your hands on a used router compared to a used computer, what sort of enclosure you can get, do you want raid, what drives in it...many factors

All I had before was a very basic PC with 3 x 400gig hard drives and 2 network cards. That's all I really need now I think.ysu wrote:I think that's the case, indeed. Every now and then I do a big clean up and move a lot of data to back up drives, that is why I don't want USB connections as it is too damned slow.

That might be a little over the top Pix, but sweet jesus, those things are cheaper than they used to be. YSU might be right, something like this and a router would probably be fine.

Re: New gateway/server PC.
I feel dirty, but it was a cheap fix.
A WD My Book 2TB network drive and a new Netgear Wireless-G modem router for under $400. God bless Officeworks price matching policy.
Set up in all of 15 mins. Just the port forwarding to sort out for torrents. I have got 60% more drive capacity and an ADSL2 compatible modem, so it was a won of sorts.
Thanks for the suggestions gents. Slowly but surely the geek factor in the house is diminishing. 1st time with out a Linux server since 1994.

Im pretty keen on that one you linked to Norbs. I am yet to see too much bad said about it.
I went down to officeworks myself this arvo. must have just missed you
They had some netgear stuff but I just wanted to see what they had for a comparison.

Re: New gateway/server PC.
Was a bit more than I wanted to spend considering you still have to drop a couple of hard drives into it. But it looks the goods. I reckon I will have another WD My Book if they keep dropping in price. The one I got doesnt have RAID on it, the 2nd version does. If I can pick up another ones of these cheap I can just back stuff up to that drive in case anything stuffs up.Bauer wrote:Im pretty keen on that one you linked to Norbs. Re: New gateway/server PC.
When I've been looking I've been thinking about the Thecus N4100PRO, it had good reviews etc.
Nowadays there's heaps and heaps of similar enclosures around.
Yeah, I'd be happy to hear how yours fare, Norbs!
