Anyone got a NAS?

I put an order in for Synoligy DS1010+ and 5x2tb drives tonight.

I was given a new WD Share Space with x2 1TB drives for a birthday pressie from the little lady, threw another x2 1TB drives at it and its been fantastic.

Spending the dollars on quality really helps with NAS drives. I have got 3 here, 2 x WD and a NetGear and they are as slow as bastards.

That said, it is only really a hassle when you want to move a lot of data. They stream HD video fine to 2 different computers at once with out a hassle.

None actually, mine is mainly used/purchased for storing design job data and photography. We now keep all of our downloaded tv shows and movies on it and stream them off to the Playstation.

How much did it cost you? I have all my photos on a 1TB drive.. I don't imagine it will be too long before it's filled.

All up it was like $1230, alot of money but its a one time purchase that will last 5+ years
Justified it to myself because I currently run a server with some drives in it, so im paying for power on those and have no redundancy.
This gives me that redundancy and I can switch off another computer and would save a bit in power

You can buy cheap 2 bays, and put 2 harddrives in and run in raid 1.. that will give you a backup capacity

Decided to wrap my ugly silver WD Sharespace in carbon 3M vinyl tonight.
I bought the vinyl in a 1260x500 piece off eBay for $40! Got plenty left for some other items.

I've got a Drobo FS, very happy with it.

Used to have a Lacie something, managed to crash the embedded linux it's based on - can't recommend for anything important. Same thing with all the other clones based on the same embedded linux.

Chaps - bit confused about the NAS thing. If I bought this device: http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product_in ... _id=127647" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (or something like it), would I be able to connect to it wirelessly with an Android tablet or laptop and stream content to those devices?

The key is to look for UPnP, if it supports UPnP you can use UPnP Play to stream to your android tablet

laptops are easer, you can just browse to your share.

Even tho I said I ordered this, ended up canceling the order.. had some crap come up and was broke for a month or so, going to look around again soon

Well I should add to my previous post. The WD and Netgear I have both have piss fart CPUs in them, and because of that, they are dogs when it comes to copy data to them. If you don't mind the slow speed, 10-20M a second, then grab one.

I shift a fair bit of data about and it drives me mad how long it takes. I am currently looking into replacing both my NAS boxes with something a bit better.

I mainly want to back up our data and photos, plus be able to stream videos and music at some point. Would a seagate or netgear they be okay for that? I'm looking for dumb-as plug and play...

I would recommend dropping money on somthing like this

You need 2 hdd's so it costs abit more, but you can put two hdd's in and run in RAID.. this will then makesure a single disk failure doesnt loose all your stuff
