Have you or do you race?
You all I know I do a bit of Road Racing but what about all you other ARSEcyclists?
I generally only do Club & Open Road Races now.
I used to do a lot of Club Crit racing (in Summer months) but they just don't do it for me anymore. There are just too many ppl taking too many risks with the majority of them being won in a bunch sprint. I guess that is the nature of the 1hr crit stylre of racing but this bloke is too old with too much responsibility to go balls out with 30 other riders.
Anyway I have my first major road race for 2011 this Saturday, it is at Warburton with the Blackburn CC. But this is just a warm-up for my 1st major VIC Open Road Race "The Baw Baw Classic" on the 10th April.

Re: Have you or do you race?
I just posted over there too. I am about to take on my 1st endevour in to endurance racing with a 24 hour. It's actually my 1st endevour in to any form of MTB's racing. I have only ever raced BMX and MX before. This is a completely different Ball game. Me and a Mate have set some goals for ourselves revolving around this event. This year we want to complete it as a team of 4, next year we'll tackle it as a duo and the Year after we want to have a crack of it Solo.
In addition to that we plan to make the trip interstate for atleast one other 24 hour this year. As well as running in a 6 Enduro series as a Duo with I think about 4 or 5 rounds around SA. Next year we will have a serious look at competing in the Mawson Marathon which is a 360km Race over 4 days, as well as making the trip to WA for the Cape to Cape Enduro also.
These enduro type races take my interest because it's a very personal achievement to complete them (let's hope I complete atleast one), The sprint racing format does not seem to appeal to me any more as I have lost my competitive drive since my young years, nowadays it's about just pushing myself to see what I can do.

Re: Have you or do you race?
This is kind of along my thinking path too. I have more desire to do a lot of those community organized ride days and things than actual races, however in the MTB world there ain't too many of them. Endurance races seem to pull the most casual crowd so that's where I'm at.w00dsy wrote:never raced, and i doubt i ever will. Re: Have you or do you race?
yeah i'm more into organized days too. I'm just not a competitive person any more. Maybe its age or the fact that i know i'm shit so i wouldn't even bother trying to beat someone. Having said that though, i had a dude following me right up my arse for about 5kms on the weekend and rather than just slow down and let him go i tried to lose him.

Re: Have you or do you race?
No I don't race for much the same reasons that you mentioned Flinty also I would need a license to race with the veterans at Eastern Creek which is around $400 a year last time I checked . I have been thinking about having a go on the time trial course at Calga . Just racing the clock and other times without any other riders around would be a good test I think and all you have to do is turn up and pay a small entry fee on the day .
The enduro sounds awesome Hz , can't wait to read your race report

Re: Have you or do you race?
Just thought I would elaborate on the purpose of this thread, lets also include organised non-competitive events as well.
Can be either ones you've completed already or plan to do in the near future.
For example rides like;
Sydney to Gong Ride: http://www.gongride.org.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
VIC Challenge Series: http://www.challengeseries.com.au/?ID=38360" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
TDU Mutual Community Challenge Tour: http://www.tourdownunder.com.au/getinvo ... lengetour2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
State Bike Rides like the Great VIC Bike Ride
I'm sure there are many more but you get what I mean.

Re: Have you or do you race?
I raced first as a Junior in Sydney (where I wrecked my back pushing too high a gear) in the 70s, resplendent but itchy in my woollen knicks (with real chamois) and jersey, Detto Pietro shoes with the holes in the sides (for coolness!) and hairnet; and riding my Pascoe (made by local cycling legend Kevin Pascoe). That took me through to my twenties. Did some of the big day races and local crits but actually preferred the training rides to the racing.
Later I rejoined Northern Suburbs as a Vet and did their crit series but after I busted my arm, I found i couldn't ride more than 20 kms without getting crippled by being twisted (my left arm doesn't straighten any more). Local bike shop bloke - can't remember his name - was going to fabricate me a sort of z shaped handlebar (he specialised in setting up bikes for paralympians) but then got a job with AIS and closed his shop!
I've tried on and off through mates still in the racing bit to find someone who can make a custom handlebar that will bring the left side of the bar closer to me while keeping the normal position of the right side. Subsequently, my bikes are mouldering in the garage...

Re: Have you or do you race?
Sadly, I sold my old Pascoe, which probably qualifies as near-vintage, but I may have an old photo of it somewhere.
Custom-made in the 70s, it was a Reynolds 531 double-butted frame, with the first Shimano 600 group-set (I had my heart set on Campag but couldn't afford it), can't remember the pedals, bars, stem and seatpost, but I had the Ideale 90 saddle which I just sold on Ebay. I had some alloy clincher rims (wish I could remember who made them, it might come back to me) and some wheels for singles (I raced on singles and trained on clinchers - I could sew back then!). Later I lashed out on a lovely Simano tool set in a blue plastic rolling pack, which i still have I now realise.
Before I'd saved up for the Pascoe (and it was a toss-up between the Pascoe from my local Crows Nest bike shop and something from Clarence Street Cyclery) by working at the Two Bees Garden nursery and the my paper run (boy the memories are flooding back now), I rode an old Peugeot with fucking awful Simplex gear, cotter pins, the lot. So heavy. Chucked on the cleanup pile many, many years ago...
I still have one of the first Cannondale Mountain Bikes with a 24 inch rear wheel and 26 inch front. I'll dig it out and take a picture.
My other bikes (which i still have) are much younger - a Genesis (aluminium custom frame) with Suntour gear (downtube shifters - I was a purist) and a steel framed trainer in Celeste Blue (memory loss, can't remember who made it - I got cheap from a bike shop in Liverpool).
I'll post some shots if folk are interested. be nice to wipe the dust off them...

Re: Have you or do you race?
I've never raced, though at one point years and years ago i considered it, but i never made the jump. So now i concentrate on the larger community events that are held in and around adelaide. Namely,
1) TDU Challenge Tour (late january)
2) Ride Like Crazy (week before Challenge tour)
3) Coast to Coast (about a month after the Challenge tour)
4) Amy's Ride (early November)
depending on how i feel i might enter one or more of the BikeSA Grand Slam Series.
lately i've been heading out to the Superdrome and enjoying that.. so maybe track racing might be in my future .. or maybe MTB.... who knows!

You should head to the Melrose Fat Tyre festival Carl, lots of little rides, lots of big rides, a campsite atmosphere, pub & pizza a night. Clinics, just general fun.CLP wrote:I've never raced, though at one point years and years ago i considered it, but i never made the jump. Re: Have you or do you race?
Checked when I got home - my blue bike's a Kerry Hopkins. Was only cheap by comparison with my racer - less than 2 grand, but it turned out to be the most comfortable bike I ever owned. Not the lightest, but so nice to ride. No too stiff - steel frames are more forgiving - and a slightly more relaxed angle on the seat post, so it always felt I got better leverage.
