How hard is it to shut down win 8?! Swipe and 3 mouse clicks on my desk top. Are we getting that lazy that it's too much to do that? I know people that never shut off their desk tops and they work in IT.

More that it wasn't obvious what to do Mr pain. The actually doing isn't that hard but it shouldn't be like an enigma.

HP is selling win7 computers again, too. There's a pretty huge demand.

Pretty sure that title still belongs to Vista.

Funnily enough, Windows 8 sold the same amount of units in the first 6 months as they did Windows 7.

I think what has flopped, is the idea of merging touch screens and laptops. There's no point unless you can remove your screen. And really, all you generally end up with is a heavy tablet.

Microsoft got it wrong by trying to combine a computer and touch interface. A metro based OS is fine for a touch device, it just feels out of place, and a bit clunky on a laptop/desktop.

I also don't like a lot of the touch screens in laptops, they have too much internal reflection and loss of contrast in my opinion.

Shut down you mean press the power button.. 1 click.

Dex, it has to do with the window phone also, there trying to do an Apple and have a 1 use platform on multiple devices.

Win 8 was there phone OS on the desktop, with the last phone OS the Win7 desktop layout.

Actually it is quiete difficult on a laptop with a pad mouse. Half the time the little menu doesn't even come put to get to the shutdown button.

Press windows key and type shut and it will give you that option, no mouse needed.

I'm a fan of win 7 and it has taken me a while to come around to 8 but what it is, I like it and I have it on desktop and surface rt.

Also right click on the Start button in 8.1 gives you the shutdown option

Looks like April 8th is the day (9th here?) for the 8.1 update, is it time to give this another look I wonder?

I think I'll image my Win7 install this time before giving Win8 another crack, I've looked at some of the changes and reviews of said changes, and I'm not convinced it's there yet, so I'll give it a try with backup plan in place after 8.1 is released. :D

I mate who's into battlefield in a big way said that same spec machine running windows 8.1 v windows 7 was getting 6-10% improvement in frame rates on windows 8.1.

I've been waiting for all the software I use to be windows 8 certified, which it is now. So I think I'm going to get a new Samsung EVO SSD and chuck 8.1 on.

8.1 is what 8 should have been from launch. But that's hindsight.

If you dislike the Modern UI, set "Boot to Desktop" and you won't have to worry about it.

Alright, you can call me converted! Have been using 8.1 for the last 5 days and while it was a bitch to get to 8.1 for some weird reason, I got there in the end after about 5 hours of rooting around trying to figure out which KB update was a pre-requisite to install 8.1, without installing every little update released since 8.0. Once set to boot to the desktop, and then pinning shortcuts to the taskbar it works not much different than Win7.

Also just installed the 8.1 update, not exactly sure the start menu is back, but it's close enough, you can set it to show the Apps menu when clicking on Start which is part of the metro ui, but it'll do for the amount of times I use the start menu, I think I need to go and read a bit more about what was in the 8.1 update because at first glance, not a lot has changed.

The "8.1 Update" was more like a Service Pack.

The actual "Start Menu" isn't reintroduced until the next major patch.

I did a format today, all up from start to finish was 45 minutes. That included all drivers and windows updates. Not too shabby these days.
