Canon L-Series 24-105mm vs 24-70mm - HELP ME DECIDE
Very hard to decide on those two. One has a wider aperture. f/2.8. Other makes up for that with IS. Some argue that they want the shallow dof you get from the extra stop, but for the price difference i didnt see the point. Im also using a full frame sensor though, so a lens that had a little more reach was appealing. Also one stop is barely anything on a 5D2. By all the lens tests I've seen they are almost identical in terms of resolution. Question I guess you need to ask yourself, do you want the extra zoom? Or some narrower dof? The 24-70 is a heavier lens too.

Oh by the way. I did hear they are going to make the new 24-70 an IS lens soon. If your talking about that lens, then yes get that. I imagine it would be much dearer though.

You might be waiting a while. That subject has been booted around the 'net for a while now.
Get the 24-105. IMHO, better value and more useful.

Both are awesome really. You can't really go wrong with either. Moneys/weight/extra reach, were the reasons I went for the 24-105. You have a crop sensor for now, so reach wouldn't really bother you.

I went for the 24-70 because the majority of my actual paid work tends to involve very low light conditions with fast moving (or at least moving) subjects, and ultimately, a stop is a stop ... apart from that specific concern (I could always crack the ISO a bit more but, it's nice to be able to keep it down) then I'd not be averse to 24-105 ownership. There are times when I wouldn't mind the extra reach ...

Take it off the camera, do a longer exposure and pop the flash from different angles. You can get all sorta of cool effects by varying where the light source is coming from.
