Don't really know what to say other than this is amazing stuff. Superb photos of a mind-blowing experience. You do realise you have ruined holidays for the rest of your life now though, don't you?

Haha! Yeah one of the guys who was on the trip is trying to convince me to come along with him to Madagascar. Seriously tempting... But I'm now very poor! I'm not sure there's many places on earth that would compare to the Galápagos to be honest.
Cheers Durbs.

Antarctic apparently. Not my suggestion, from some one that has been to both places, multiple times.
And get this Dex, last trip to the Antarctic, he took a Mamiya MF camera with him! He did it years ago with a Canon 20D that gave him no end of troubles in the cold.

Yeah Antarctica would be incredible too... Kelly's parents have been there twice and got fantastic shots as well. They also said some had issues with their dSLRs. The medium format would have got some spectacular results I'd imagine.

I just called him, reluctantly because he is a tool, and had a chat.DexterPunk wrote:Yeah Antarctica would be incredible too... Kelly's parents have been there twice and got fantastic shots as well. The 20D was getting 1 hour out of its battery. That was on a trip he did in Spring, so it still got a little chilly at -10C apparently. Wind chill factor dropped it lower.
I asked him if he had all the good gear, where would he go if he could never go again. His answer. "Galapagos 20 years ago, Antartic in summer now."
He asked me if you had been to South America (as in Peru, Brazil or Bolivia) or Alaska. He also recommended Africa *IF* you have a long lens. He took a 200mm to Africa 4 times and struggled every time.
That said, he is a bit of a weird guy. He is a perfectionist and thinks his shots are good enough for NatGeo. To be honest, the stuff you have put up in this thread crap on most of the stuff I have seen of his.

Re: Galápagos islands and South America - (Many Photos added
Interesting. The conservation work removing goats, rats (somewhat) and other introduced species... And the reintroduction of many tortoises back to where they are meant to be has improved the Galápagos significantly. We had many discussions about the balance of tourism with our guides who both grew up in the Galápagos and are very passionate about the place. They said that the tourism is important because ecuador simply doesn't have the money to fund a lot of this work without it. I'm not saying he's wrong (I wasn't there 20 years ago). But I also wonder which parts he saw then, and now to compare.
I went to Peru, and Belize as well... Photos will come eventually but there were nowhere near as many taken as in the Galápagos.
Antarctica would be magnificent!
No kayak rooting.

cheers guys.
Some photos from around Quito, Ecuador. It's not a safe city, so many of the shots were taken from the top of a bus. It's not a good idea to walk around with a good camera, although I did it when close by to the hotel.

Re: Galápagos islands and South America - (Many Photos added
Our trip to Peru started at Cusco. High enough in altitude that I felt sick most of the time, but the coca tea helped. It may have been a placebo effect, but it did help. Still it wasn't bad enough to stop me exploring or taking photos. There were various Incan ruins around the area of Cusco to see, and the town itself is lovely. We went on a few tours and saw ladies weaving alpaca wool, apparently it takes them near a month to make a jumper. The more expensive is baby alpaca wool, I bought a jumper to give to my old man as a prezzie. Eventually we headed towards the town 'Aguas Calientes' below Muchu Picchu. The trip is by train, and it's just spectacular! The train itself has windows across the roof, since the Andes are so high you couldn't really take in all the scenery if it were a normal train. The ride there was one of the highlights of Peru for me. Macchu Picchu itself is damn incredible, words can't really describe it, and the images don't do it justice either. We did do it wrong though I think... we were at Aguas Calientes by about lunch time and didn't get to Machu Picchu till about 1pm. By this stage their must have been 20 busses up there, and a shitload of tourists. I guess I was one of them too. It did spoil the experience a bit having to excuse yourself past a million people while there. If I were to do it again, I'd have spent the night in town, and head up there first light. But anyway, it was a magical place to be and i'm definitely glad I got to see it.

Amazing scenery and great pics as always.
I think Quito is why a friend of mine ended up chained to a lampost having been robbed of her brand new wedding ring and watch whilst there on honeymoon.

Some shots from the Amazon in Peru... The river is the Tambopata. It was really tricky to get a decent shot, the rain forests were quite dark, and often the wildlife was quite a long way away. I would have liked a macro lens for all the bugs too. I was not well for this part of the trip and possibly was a bit lazy with the camera. I was very happy that I managed to get a shot of a hummingbird though, those little guys are damn fast.

I usually know when I've taken a good shot. That hummingbird was a surprise when I went through my pics.

Our guide called it a 'horned spider' which seems to be also called a 'Spiny orb-weaver'. On wiki theres a crap load of different species... Not sure which it would be.

Re: Galápagos islands and South America - (Many Photos added
Theres an American bloke I kept in contact with over Facebook from the first time I went, awesome guy, who is also heading there again. Actually it will be his round 3, and he's taking along his grand son. I e-mailed the company today (http://www.galapagostravel.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and they are thrilled that I'm going for a second time. As they would be I guess given it's rather pricey. Anyway, after speaking to my mate in the US, he said he tried to book in march this year for July next year and it was already full. It seems that's a really busy time of year and a lot of americans are off school or uni etc then, and it can fill up fast. Galapagos travel have pencilled me in for July 8-25 2015, and I'll be sending a deposit in the next few weeks. I'm pretty excited that I'm actually going to see it again. I know there's so much other amazing stuff in the world to go and see, but I genuinely loved it that much, I just have to go again. And a bit like a mind blowing film that you want to share with everyone you know, It's going to be great seeing my mate see all this for the first time. Also going to be cool seeing a familiar face from the first time I went there.
