Sporty car for under 30k

Post by AstrO »

Hey Guys :D

With the imminent sale of my house I'm looking to buy another car. I currently have a 2005 3.0R Liberty wagon (5 speed auto) and I'm looking to get something with a little bit more performance, with a manual gearbox and in a sedan (this will be the 2nd car).

On my short-list are the following cars...
  • 2005 Impreza WRX STI (a car I've always wanted)
  • 2006-2007 Liberty GT Spec.B
  • 2007 Liberty GT Tuned By STI
I would consider another NA, but I really want a turbo... so what other makes and models would you guys recommend?

Cheers :driver:

an Evo or Skyline GTR are the obvious other turbo sedans for that kind of money, a Toyota chaser could be a somewhat left-field choice though, a bit cheaper too.

speaking of very left field:

Dont know it should be that cheap though :D

I've owned a manual R34 Skyline 4-door for the last 5 years and it has been awesome. Most of them are automatics, but if you can find a manual one they are excellent cars. In truth though you couldn't go wrong with a WRX - I love 'em.
It's been nice, chaps.

I had a look at some of the R34 25GT-T's on carsales and they may be getting a little old. An Evo would be nice, but the interior's look and feel like crap... but I guess that's not what they're made for. ;)

R32 is a good idea

R32s are nice but not exactly sedans. Glorious sound, however!

How about a B7 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Quattro? You can mod those engines for big power if desired and they're pretty well screwed together with lovely interiors. Very nice cars all round.

Listen to the man. If that's what you really desire, don't ask us what we like, it's not what you want, is it? :)
Surprise, no sig. Now there is. Or is there?

The catch about the STI is finding one in blue with lowish k's, good condition and not modded... maybe I'm asking too much. ;)

I've got a 2005 STi Spec C that we're not really using, unfortunately it can't be registered for normal road use....

Have you had a chance to rally it yet?

It's not going to be a rally car, we're keeping it as a road car. It's too nice.

We've run it in a few track sprints, but that's it.

Anyway, I think you probably are asking too much to find an STi that hasn't been tinkered with, but they're pretty tough. The downside of the Oz-spec '04-'05 STis are that they have a bit of a torque-hole down low, so if you're in the wrong gear it's just painful.

EDIT: Rots, WTF is that.... :fall:

So how well does it run?

I'd be happy with one like this (limited mods), but it may not be around by the time I'm ready to buy one (and it doesn't have any internal or engine bay pictures).

Well, you'd just have to go and inspect it. :) That one looks like a nice thing.

As for mine, it's pretty impressive. I don't know whether the Japanese owner chipped it, but it certainly seems to have a bit of poke (once it's on boost). His after-market struts need a bit of work though - I did a dirt sprint (autocross) a few months ago and the car was trying to spit me off the road backwards everywhere. Massively tail-happy. I had to wind the diff to "lock" (50-50) to try and keep the thing under control and even then it was still power oversteering.

Well there is a Toyota Celica, Chrysler Voyager, 80's Mercedes Benz SL, Mazda MX5 and a Suzuki Vitara 2 door visible in that photo. All looks normal to me?! :p

I reckon one of these might be better Astro...
