Hz's soundwave review

Post by Hz-Lab »

Hyro da hero - good at 1st, faded fast.
Chimaera - great, as always.
Turisas - theatrical metal with violins, what's not to like
Saves the day - woeful
Steel panther - brilliant, highlight of the day
River city extension - pretty darn good, seemed out of place at soundwave tho
Unwritten law - was expecting "tragic", got "satisfying"
Messhuggah - were average, I love messhuggah but meh, did nothing for me today
Coal chamber - relived my youth, fuck yeah
Bad religion - getting old as hell but still showing the youngins how it's done.
Limp bizkit - suprisingly good, I had to go see how tragic Fred durst was only to be surprised with quality showmanship
Marilyn Manson - fucking woeful, get off the stage u overweight fucked up twat!
Hatebreed - yes! Brill! I got like 1 meter from a death circle before I started crying and ran like a schoolgirl
Slipknot - 3rd time I've seen them, they are always on their game! Always.
I am the avalanche - new band for me, very impressive, small crowd though
Devin Townsend project - came close to the highlight, that man is a genius. Such power, such god like qualities. Nerdy tho. Lol
Machine head - always on it, their shows always seem the same tho.
Raised fist - good way to end the day

1st festival I have been to in years and I have to say it shits on bdo's as far as an event goes, the organization was awesome, longest wait for a beer - 1 min 34*

* may not be accurate

I thought Devin Townsend had stopped doing anything after SYL. Some of his stuff is fucking fantastic! It's bloody good music! I always will have a soft spot for Bad Religion and Coal Chamber (so many memories). So wish I coulda gotten to the Brissy soundwave :(

They're kind of a comedy band, like Dethklok. Just talent mixed with a smile.

Yeah they were awesome, funny bastards. A lot of talking to the crowd between songs too, which normally shits me but it was hilarious. Funny guys, but the music is good enough to survive without the funny lyrics too.

I did, first festival I have been to in quite some years, I really got sick of festivals, and live music as a whole about 5 years ago after I just wasn't finding the value in it.

Lately though I have been checking out smaller bands at Pubs and stuff in the city and it ignited the flame again. Then I seen Coal Chamber on the line up for soundwave, that sold me. There are about 3 or 4 bands that I didn't see when I was younger that I have told myself I will definitely go see if they ever tour again. Coal Chamber was one of those, Strapping Young lad is another, and whilst I doubt I'll ever get to see them, Devin Townsend project was an awesome comprimise. Then I got more excited as woodsy slowly got me more and more in to Steel Panther. But as a whole, It was fricken tops.

I did a lot of running from stage to stage, as you can see above. lol

Was an awesome day. Machine Head were the highlight for me, but that was expected as their new album is the best thing I've heard in years :) Seemed that the sound was slightly off though, but didn't ruin the experience.

Steel Panther were hilarious!

Always a tough gig to get sound right for so many different setups. Just luck if one or two come out well.

Volume was the main issue. I know old Fred Durst was having a winge about it. But I also noticed it being very quiet for Steel Panther aswell.

Wow, now that's definitely something I've never heard of. I would normally complain the opposite way. Overcompensation?

It was possible to have a conversation in the mosh pit for slipknot. And they were one of the louder acts. Lol

A few bands there I like. Including Slipknot, Machine Head, Messhuggah and I do like Devin Townsend from Strapping Young Lad days. The only bad point to living in the country is it's a decent drive to get to see such bands and I haven't done it for years :(

Maybe your hearing is going out in your old age, Hz? :) I didn't find it quiet at all... could've been louder though too I guess

Was right up front for Machine Head... ears were ringing for a few days after that

Wow Futures was exact opposite. Never been to a festival that was so loud! You'd be 150 metres back from the stage and had to yell to hear someone next to you. Was insane actually!

Aphex was there I believe. Skrillex while I'm sure would be interesting probably quite underwhelming at the sametime. Future intrigued me but still not motivationally enough to get tickets.

I like his music but am I an old fuddy duddy in thinking it's completely lame that he doesn't play live, he doesn't even mix music, just plays a pre-mixed set? It's not that hard to learn to mix well, not if it's your full time job.

He triggers samples live, it's as live as u can do that music really. What most producers do live is incorporate live musicians in to their set, might be something he could look in to. He should watch some daft

I meant more that he wasn't really DJing or mixing at all. Had a DJ mate see him at Sydney saying he wasn't mixing at all. Maybe he was being lazy that day.

Don't worry, I probably would not like the whole dubstep thing if it were not for the fact I have dabbled in production. It's more admiration for the production than anything else. A lot of time and fiddling as goes in to dubstep, probably about 5 to 6 times more than ur average dance track. Glitch electronica is another level again, hence my love for aphex twin. It's not music I'll just cruise along listening to, I find it more rewarding when i can sit there and listen to it well
