Final nail last night, I've signed up to Optus Cable this morning.

Yeah, been pushed over the edge on this one too.

I've been a faithful Internode customer for over 10 years, but my <=7Mbps sync and sync flakiness have pushed me in to the arms of the evil one..... Telstra Bigpond Cable.

Of course, this all assumes I can get it installed.

The first cable installer guy came expecting that the house already had a cable connection.... nope.... but that's what Telstra's records showed. He then opened the pit out the front of the house.... no cable in there.... in fact there was only a single run of copper for my standard house connection.... where was the HFC for the street????? A call to his office discovered that there was another pit across the road that had a conduit running under the road just for my house (a standard suburban lot, on a standard suburban development).

Next... he decides to verify that a HFC can be run from my house pit through the conduit to the house.... nope.... turns out a tree root (or something) has likely crushed the conduit near the very edge of my property.

So now I wait here patiently, one week on, struggling to cope with porn at 360p, waiting for an alleged Telstra contractor to arrive with a borer to carve a new path for a new conduit to my house. Time will tell whether we have success or blue-balls.

Oh jesus Montey, i feel for you. On a cheeky note a fair few pages ago Dex and some others couldn't understand why I download so much... well Montey's case would be a valid reason, I've got 2.96TBs of "unsorted" 720p and 1080p comfort, which I chew through as needed.

My issues aren't really with TPG rather the very old cabling and what not through the pits. The last time this issue happened it took over a month and 3 or 4 techs to visit my house and the pits to finally agree that no it wasn't my side of things but rather a Y split where one run went to absolutely fucking nothing. Bar the water logged issues the way it was all connected was piss poor. I ended up getting 3 months of internet for free and a fourth month to cover the cost of the modem I needed to buy to confirm it wasn't me.

Managing IT support teams did have it advantages during the ordeal as I knew how to play 1st, 2nd and in my case 3rd level support teams to my advantage.

Still waiting on my visit from the Telstra contractor to put in my new conduit.

They've exceeded the expected timeline they set, so I rang them last week. They set a new expectation of by the end of this week. When the original guy came he said I could call him directly if nothing after 3 weeks so he could look up what was happening in the back end. If nothing happens by Friday I'll give him a call on Monday.

Telstra is taking their time, but i'd rather be patient and get it than stick with TPG(iiNet(Internode)).

Well... we have progress.

I had a team of Telstra people (an actual team of 3 people all wearing Telstra logo'ed work gear) excavating parts of my garden, connecting in new conduit, and running new cable, including replacing my existing telephone wire.

It turned out that some d-ckhead, most likely from the local council, took a hacksaw (yes, you read that correct, a hacksaw cut was very evident) to the conduit and simply cut Telstra's conduit to get it out of the way when they were laying the pavement. This was probably done within the first few months of the house being built, some 15+ years ago.

So, the current state of play is that the cut portion of conduit has been fixed, the existing telephone wire replaced up to the house, with HFC installed up to my house. On Monday afternoon the Telstra contractor will arrive to install the cable in to my house and I will finally achieve ~100Mbps (hopefully) of bandwidth love.

I have to say that the Telstra contractor, Colin, who came out originally is a legend. When he came out and identified an issue he told me "expect it to take 2 weeks to resolve, but if you haven't heard anything after 3 weeks give me a ring directly". I gave it 3 weeks, agitated Telstra directly and got nothing from them (I spent the next 4 weeks repeatedly contacting Telstra who could tell me nothing). I gave Colin a ring at the 4 week mark and he WTF'ed it. After some more agitating, including Twitter-baiting @Telstra, and contacting Colin again, on Monday of this week, it turned out that he absolutely ripped them a new one and then they just turned up and got shit done. When I rang Colin today to let them know it was fixed he told me I could get stuffed about getting online on Saturday (he isn't working), but he'd be happy to come out Monday afternoon. Fooking legend!!!

SpeedTest grabs will appear as soon as I have something to show. :-)

Awesome news Montey!

I assume all work is no cost to you? (Telstra / Foxtel installation cost aside)

PS. Telstra cable rocks. Make sure you're plugged in via gigabit Ethernet (yes), and you select a Telstra mirror on the speedtest.net web site. You should be able to get 120mbit/s down on a quiet period. Only about 2.5mbit back up though!

Yeah, definitely looking forward to it.

Other than standard setup costs there has been no mention of other charges. So if they were to try and sting me extra I'd probably tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine

Woot... well it took some doing, but...

Somewhat of an improvement over my ol' 7Mbps Internode ADSL sync-speed. :-)

Nice mate!

Now to decide what to do with the extra bandwidth ... ;)

Yeah, this ain't NBN, it's HFC. Those speeds are fairly typical for HFC Bigpond. But, I only need upload speeds for outbound emails, TCP replies (ACK's, FIN's, & RST's), and online gaming. So upload speeds are far less important.

I decided to dive in to the HFC world when it was announced that NBNCo was going to upgrade it to DOCSIS3.5 in 2017. This means that NBN, as a fibre solution, is never coming down my street (and I am fine with that since I have HFC), and when the DOCSIS upgrade takes place I will get up to 1Gbps down my HFC connection.

NBN Fibre hooked up today!

Sweet mother of god :yikes:

Looks like I've gained about 20ms in ping as well which is nice, Darwin isn't real good, I normally get 100ms to the Aussie iRacing servers and 300 to the US, every little bit helps :)

Telstra 4GX

My wife got 120/35 when she did a test.

If only their prices were reasonable, it would be a decent replacement for the crappy 4/0.7 ADSL while waiting for the NBN.
