This is pretty standard procedure for airliner testing. When they did it with the A380, I understand they expected to sacrifice the entire landing gear.
Your average line pilot wouldn't want to have to explain that to their employer...

Quite a bit higher.
From what I understand, race brakes get to about 1400º Fahrenheit and these are about 1400º Celsius.
