Nice work Kev. Can't wait to see if it lives up to your expectations. I have a friend in Perth looking at doing the exact same thing.

I just hope I can do it justice.

We're due for a big dump of snow here friday. If it turns up before then I'll have some nice scenery to try it on.

He's saving me a not inconsiderable £1200 over the best online shop prices. That means for the price I was willing to spend on a 6D I can get the 5D3 instead. Or you can look at it as the 16-35 effectively being 'free'. Should be an interesting summer :)

Hopefully I can save enough between now and Silverstone to get the 100-400mm as well but we'll see how it goes.
Cripes! :yikes:

What are you guys living on? Potatoes?

Seriously, good luck with that stuff. If you can't afford the 100-400, you should seriously consider the 400mm f/5.6 prime. Very light for its focal length and fast focussing.

Been casting a covetous eye in the direction of a 5D MkIII myself...no money though...bugga.

Just my initial thoughts...

The 16-35 is a lovely lens, very sharp, just keep in kind at 16mm it has a fair whack of barrel distortion and has chromatic aberration as well. You probably have to expect that a bit, I assume that will reduce closed down a bit. If you can I'd suggest using it at around f/5.6 - 11.

The 100-400 has exceeded my expectations. For an older lens I wasn't expecting the quality images I'm getting from it. I'm sure the 70-300 would be much better for more advanced IS, however there are people claiming it to be significantly sharper to the point that you could crop to the same field of view and maintain the same quality. This is rubbish. At least with my copy, it's getting beautifully sharp images at 100% crop that rival my 70-200 f/4 L which always amazed me for detail in a zoom.

The 24-105 will be your workhorse I'd say. It's a great all round lens. It's not the sharpest lens I've used, but it's acceptable. Perhaps I need to micro adjust mine a little though. It has been dropped several times! :o

I'm not sure if stopping down will have much effect on CA.

If you are using the latest versions of Lightroom, the lens adjustments are very sophisticated. My 10-22 has similar CA problems, as you would expect but they can be easily and quickly eliminated in Lightroom. There are even presets for certain lenses. I know ACR has the same capability but it's slower and less convenient for me.

Yeah, there's definitely ways to sort that out in post. I know how good lightroom is, but for some reason, I just can't seem to take to it every time I try. I know Bridge/ACR so well now, it really slows me down trying to work out the equiv functions. I should persist, but every time I have some work to do, I end up reverting back to what I know and can rely upon.

You are probably right regarding closing down... I haven't looked into it for quite a while. I know it's caused by different wavelengths having different focal lengths. My brain just assumed that could be improved by an increased DOF. Possibly not though.

I'm a good saver too. What I decide to save goes straight out of my bank account on the day I get it so I don't have it to spend in the first place. I tend to save up for something and then buy it rather than buy it first and pay extra on interest over several months.

Battery is charged and in, along with the CF card.
I've just unpacked it all and made sure the two lenses look ok. Man that 16mm is wiiiiide. My living room is only about 18ft wide and I just stood about 10-12ft from one wall and the whole thing is in frame!

Busy work week so I won't get a chance to take any pictures until the weekend but hopefully the weather will be nice enough to go and try it out.

Now I'm about to look through the 5000 menu settings and get some basics sorted on it :)

Some immediate comparisons to my 550D.

It's a lot heavier and meatier, but sits better in my hand.

Autofocus is at least twice as fast.

I just noticed it has Tv, Av, M and ....B
Have to read the book and find out what that one's about.
Possibly 'bollocks'. The setting you find you left the camera on when that once in a lifetime picture came up and you clicked without checking first :D

Bulb.

Shutter stays open whilst ever button is pushed.

I suspect the 550D will feel like a toy in a few days.

Just got my 24-70L back off a local guy who got the same package as you Kev. The 5D3 and 24-105L. He asked me how much I would sell the 24-70 for or would I do a straight swap. LOL

I told him I would swap it for his 100-400L (just testing him, no fucking way I would do that!) Stupidly he said no way! He still thinks bigger is better.

Ah the good old Bulb setting, excellent for experimenting with those night shot.
Haven't seen that on a camera since my 1st old fully manual SLR. ;)
Would be awesome on a DSLR as you get to see the result straight away & can adjust accordingly on the next exposure.

Yep norbs if I could find an older 2nd hand 24-70 F2.8L I'd jump at it too.

That's also known as PASM.

In short,

Tv = ("Time value") Shutter priority auto
Av = ("Aperture value") Aperture priority auto
M = Manual
And of course B = "Bulb".

I looked at both the 24-105 and 24-70 when I bought my camera and decided on the 24-105 mainly due to the weight difference. There's not a lot of difference between the two. One has the extra stop, the other an extra couple in IS. Although that's not going to be much good for movement. Image quality on all the MTF graphs from lens tests I've seen have been very similar. If I had to make the same choice again I'd be torn, the extra stop would be handy for the weddings I've been shooting, but weight, specially for intentional travel, can be very important.

Either way they are both great lenses. I also wouldn't swap my 100-400 for a 24-70 :) I have the 24-105 already.

There's not that many lenses I actually want now since grabbing the 16-35 and 100-400. A TS would be nice. And a Zeiss 50 or 24 would also be nice but I don't exactly need those.

I knew the other three. They're on my 550. But it didn't have B. Bulb was active if you were in Tv and scrolled up beyond 30s for the shutter speed.

So, all I have left to get is the 100-400 and I think I'll be happy.
Looks like I'm going to at least one day of Silverstone for the F1's this year with a mate so I'll have to do some hard saving and get it just before I go.
