In an open letter American Cardinal Raymond Burke and German Cardinal Walter Brandmuller argued the abuse of children in Catholic institutions was not solely caused by an abuse of power by clergy but was "part of a much greater crisis".

"The plague of the homosexual agenda has been spread within the church, promoted by organised networks and protected by a climate of complicity and a conspiracy of silence," they wrote.

Both cardinals are outspoken critics of Pope Francis and belong to a traditionalist wing of the Church that includes many that believe homosexuality is the main cause of clerical abuse.

There were stories in the Australian media around that time that a big decision had been handed down but they were unable to report on it due to a suppression order. They also said that international media was free to report on the verdict, because the suppression order didn't apply overseas.

I figured it was probably Pell, and international news sites confirmed it.

If I try to put myself in Howards shoes I guess I can understand it to some extent. If someone I knew for a long time and was friends with was charged with a crime that went against everything I knew about that person, even something as heinous as child abuse, I don't know that I could just immediately accept it and cut that person off.

It's easy to view it as them defending a pedo, but it's not that simple. They're defending the image they held of that person and maybe don't want to accept it could have been so wrong.

Very good point. Having been through a near identical situation myself it is an extremely difficult position to be in.
Only difference in my situation is, I was never Prime Minister.

Took me a few years to come to terms with it, talking to the victim sealed the other persons fate for me.
