Pell not travelling to Australia, and instead doing video from Rome, has had the effect of focusing international attention on his testimony, helped by the best picture win for Spotlight. There may have been less coverage if he'd flown home!

The Pope has a problem. He has been very active in trying to stamp out abuse but has a major church administrator who is causing him some embarrassment. I don't know if sacking Pell is the solution but the next week or so will be an interesting time to be in the Vatican. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when they next meet.

It's so sad, I watched a bit of his testimony and he's very droll and matter of fact. But he's talking about such horrible stuff, from a position of power in an institution that is supposed to be about helping fellow people and community.

Sometimes I feel like I just can't comprehend it.

This is a Royal Commission. If the findings are that there was some sort of criminal case, like negligence, against him then I'm sure the DPP will pursue him. I'm not sure that the Vatican can do very much to protect him any more. Cases like Cardinal Marcinkus - who was embroiled in the Vatican Bank scandal and hid out in the Vatican - are not likely to be repeated. The question is whether or not Pell can actually be charged with anything.

Meantime, the internet being what it is, I recommend due caution.

My father in law was a devote catholic in his young days, when he was in his early 20's he was accepted into the priest training program thing. He did it for almost a year and was really enjoying studying to become a priest. Then he went on some religious retreat with a group of fellow students and some senior priests. He came back a few days later, quit the program and never went to church again. He has never spoken of why he left but he completely changed and is now a militant atheist. Always hope one day he might spill the beans on what happened.

That's really interesting.

Tell him you're now religious and see if he tells you! Haha

A valid point. Heard someone say that they view bum raping a 12yo boy is technically not classed as sex so they think it's a ok way of getting off without violating their vowel of celibacy.
