Interesting review and quite well done.

I've been using an internal 2x teleconverter in my television lens since I started shooting over 20 years ago. I'm surprised it's taken so long to incorporate it into a stills lens.

The options for shooting with a 2x teleconverter up would be limited to EOS 1 series cameras, up to the 1D MkIV. This is because these are the only cameras which will auto focus at f/8. None of the others, including the 1Dx will go past f/5.6. Yes, you could also drop in the internal 1.4 to give 1120mm but the chances of that working - at f/9.5 - are pretty much non-existent.

For motorsport and wildlife this would probably work very well. For a working photographer at major sporting events, weight is a major issue and this gets rid of a couple of bugbears many people have with their kit. You don't need to carry a TC and you still have a reasonably fast lens with a reasonably useful zoom range. Does it provide any advantages over the 100-400? Yes, it's a bit faster and yes, it has the built in converter but is long at the wide end and much, much more expensive. You can also not use a 100-400 with a 1.4 converter on anything less than a 1 series body.

Given the choice of carrying this or a 400mm f/2.8, it's a no-brainer. The 400 f/2.8 is just too heavy. Better than a 300 f/2.8? I doubt it. I'm not saying that as a (former) 300 f/2.8 owner either. f/2.8 is f/2.8 and that's that.

A lot of this logic what what I used when I decided to buy a 500mm. It was way lighter than either a 400 f/2.8 or a 600 f/4 and a fair bit cheaper. The focal length was about what I wanted and in the end I could see few advantages in the extra 100mm. I didn't need it anyway. With the passing of my 300mm, that lens turned out to be a brilliant investment (believe me - in this area, lenses are investments).
