I use to build model kits but it's something I haven't done for years. I don't have room to display finished kits. 3D modelling on the PC is a good alternative but not having something physical to display is lacking some feel. 3D printing is offering the best of both worlds. Build your own kit on the PC, print it, paint it, display it. It's cool idea.

I've been given the task of looking around for a 3D printer to buy for work. Woohoo!

Will just be something basic for us to familiarise ourselves with using one. They are improving so fast that there's no point investing loads of money in something just yet. Also we don't know how much use it may get. They are quite cheap now though, and something decent can be picked up for $1000-2000.

i wonder if it will ever get to a point where 3d printing replaces carbon fibre. Obviously strength is the limiting factor at the moment but it'd be pretty amazing to think the designers could one day print their car out.

As of a couple of years ago the 3D printing was already strong enough for F1 teams to run some parts directly on the cars (rather than just wind tunnel etc). Things like wing cascades and flip ups that don't get a particularly high load. I'd imagine that in the distant future stuff will indeed be strong enough but there's just so many different mediums to print in as well as different ways of printing that at the moment the development is all over the place.

If you are feeling adventurous you can build your own 3D printer from EWaste for around $60!

A guy I know designed his own CNC machine and built it. Then he used the CNC machine to build his own 3D printer. He designs and prints his own phone cases but I think he's a bit of a wasted talent.

I had my first stuff 3D printed the other day. Very basic but awesome to see something you've drawn on the screen become tangible.

A friend of mine is a librarian in the Docklands area in Melbourne, very close to where I live. Apparently, they now run courses in how to use 3D printers. Libraries moving with the times. Cool. 3D printers are now commonplace in schools.

We have one at work that I've checked out a few times. Very cool to watch and check out how the finished product is layered/printed.

I just ordered a 3D printer for work yesterday. Can't wait! Been learning blender and how to prepare models for print over the last month or so. I decided on an Ultimaker 2. They have a distributor in Melbourne which is a big deal for us if something should go wrong. There's a big online support network, and forums for the printer as well. Most of the printers I found in the same price range were around 50-100 micron, this guy is 20 micron, and also prints around 20x20x20. Similar printers in most other manufactures are considerably more expensive. Either way, it's likely to be outdated in 12 months time, which is why we are going for a budget machine for now. There's quite a lot on interest around the medical faculty for 3D printing, so if I play my cards right, I may get those jobs, and a much much bigger budget for a printer.
