Need a commuter ~1k

Post by nutty »

Hey guys,

Im about 3km from work with the ferry, until now ive been running it.. but decided I should look at getting a pushy and going the long way..

I wanna spend ~10k on a commuter, its fairly flat with a small uphill with basically no main street riding (mostly bike path/back streets)

I was looking at something like this? http://www.avantiplus.com.au/products/a ... anti-inc-2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as im a sucker for the matte black look

Im not a fan of black bikes. I want to be seen.

That said, that looks like a good commuter. Belt drive I dont know a lot about though.

Alfine hub gears I have heard some good things about. Never used them myself.

Agree. Stealthy is not an adjective I want applied to my bike.

I've seen a few Orbea Carpe models around, which i think are pretty neat

two models (h20 and h30) located in Qld

Are you set on a Flat bar? a CX bike can make a decent commuter. If the small uphill section you speak of isn't too severe you could also think about a single speed bike. If you're riding in winter/night time, budget for some decent lights too :)

Those look good, I was kinda set on a flat bar due to just wanting somthing to cruise on, longer term I might get something else.

CX=Cyclocross

Heavy duty road bike essentially.

yes, you may ask. ;)

CX = Cyclocross!
related to a road bike (ie. has drop bars) but generally runs either cantilever or disk brakes. Usually a bit beefier than a true road bike with a slightly more relaxed geometry, runs wider, knobbly tyres similar to a MTB. Chainrings are traditionally 36/46. Some have mounting points for panniers, which make them an excellent commuter bike.

bear in mind also that most CX bikes also come with inline brake levers on the top of the handlebars. So you can ride it much like a flat bar until you find your coordination :)
That said, if i was looking for something as a pure commuter, i'd possibly be looking at one of those Orbea Carpe or maybe a Whyte Stirling..

i guess just be cautious of buying too cheap.. if you don't like riding a bike, you'll never enjoy riding to work!

maybe this secondhand CX bike:

before you go looking second hand, try to work out what size bike you might need... might save you a few hassles in the long run :)
