Sony Xperia Z (Was rugged smartphone)

Gents, I spoke to Telstra the other day and can probably update my Galaxy S2. It is starting to play up. A couple of falls down some stairs has it doing odd things here and there.

I am thinking of getting a phone that can take my bumps and scrapes a bit better.

Is the Sony (Sony Xperia Z) the only real choice?

Todd, does it need to be a big form type phone?

I can't recommend this enough.
Small, and probably slow by comparison, but, tough as old boots.
Underwater, down stairs, and attacked by an aged Labrador, but good as gold.

Thanks Carlos.

The S2 refused to let me call out this morning, so I wandered into the Telstra shop and ended up with the Xperia Z.

God almighty setting up a new phone is an arse pain. :)

You dont realise how many little customisations you do to a phone over nearly 2 years. :)

Things like the XBMC username and password. Knowing exactly where apps are on what home screen. Things like that.

That said, I have got a fair few of them sorted now.

Exactly what I said to the Telstra shop dude that did it. He argued the point and said it just happens at times and to "Never rely on the cloud".

Ah see that was you first mistake, getting another person to do it. The second mistake was that person was a retail assistant who are renowned for not having a clue & third mistake was not having your own local backup making it impossible to revert back if needed.
I thought you had more tech sense than that mate. :p:

My mistake was letting her get the fucking thing. :)

She was told when she decided that I was doing NO tech support on it. The guy at the T Shop said he did it 5 times a day. I wiped my hands of it.

I showed my Apple loving mate Sam the phone yesterday. He loved it. The iPhone 5 looks tiny in comparison. The thing that got him was the ability to send SMS from the computer. Is there an IOS equivalent of DeskSMS?

The Xperia Z is cool. I've been wondering for years why phones aren't water/dust proof when they have been making cameras waterproof for ages.

iMeasage might be similar? It's not strictly SMS though. It's only to apple devices.

I asked about iMessage Dex. He said what you said, only within the walls of the Apple fraternity.

The Xperia Z's screen is a grub of a thing. So many finger prints on it when you hold it in the right light.

Still too early to tell Pix.

Will put a write up together next week with the good and bad points.

I can say this Pix, battery life is stunning compared to the S2.

Tue night when I went to bed it was on 35%. I had to play a 1080P movie to flatten it.

Last night, I had a nap to watch the cycling and woke up at 10:30PM. The phone was still on 45% then.

4G is pretty quick, even in Nowra during school holidays.

That battery life is awesome!

It's amazing how hi-res today's phone screens are. My screen monitor at work is an old 19" 1280x1024 res and screenshots from modern phones are just ginormous!

I'm liking what I'm seeing about the Xperia Norbs, my S2 contract is up for renewal soon too and I've been tossing up between this and a HTC One (if it ever shows up) so I'm keen to hear more about your experience with the Sony.

LOL. Sorry EK. On the old phone Imageshack was set to resize. I obviously forgot to do it on the new phone.

The screen on the Sony isnt as saturated as the S2, but it is still pretty good.

I showed Sam a movie on it yesterday and he is getting one. This from a guy who has been telling me his iPhone 5 shits on everything.

Another observation. It is bordering on being too big. It is hard to use with one hand. I was trying to sync the brides iphone 4S with iTunes and it sits in my hand a lot better than mine.

Also, having never had a phone with the LED notification, I wasn't sure what the fuss was about. Now, I fucking love it. Grab lightFlow and I can tell at a glance (the phone screen is off) whether I have email, sms, twitter, arsebook, low battery or if Bluetooth is on. Fucking excellent.
