Bugger. Have they got any ideas as to what caused it to burn up?

It just finished the first stage of power and was transitioning to the next stage of powering up, while over the sound barrier..

The ISS is in some serious trouble. The docking adapter is out of action and half the world's rocket programs have either failed or are inactive at the moment. Lack of supplies is going to be a major headache.

As I understand it, the Progress supply rocket failed - an extremely rare event for a Soyuz and there was a Proton failure a few months ago. Actually, there have been multiple Proton failures recently but there is another one on the pad for launch next week. Not sure what the mission is but I guess if you shoot enough rockets at the ISS, one or two will get there in the end.

One of the things which shits me about space programs is when nationalism takes the floor. I treat all of the current space programs, including those of China and India (very impressive recently), the same way. If you can make it work then you're in the space race. All of them have done it and, even after almost 60 years, it remains a major technical challenge.

But you'd think as it's now over 50 years since man first went in to space, it would be cheap and routine. After all, driving and flying are (relatively).

I think it's the financial pressures Kev. Everyone is cutting corners. The ability of a space agency to make money relates to the cost per kilo of anything you want to launch. This is why the Space Shuttle was retired - it was not cost competitive.

The end result is almost inevitable.

It's like we've lost sight of what we're doing and why.

We saw the ISS pass by Jupiter and Venuis last night about 5.34pm. Kids were excited. We could see the two planets clearly and then the ISS appeared from the north, passing right by the planets and over our heads as a bright light. Pretty neat to think there's a bunch of folk up there and great to see it.
