Looks like the Snowman took a wrong turn a few years back.
It's amazing how they can find such a small thing in such an unimaginably vast arena, let alone skim a space craft past it.

Incredible!!! What gets me is how do they lock onto the radio transmission as it must be so faint after travelling so far.
Assuming radio signals degrade in space?

The data transfer for the pics is 1Kb/sec and it'll take until Sept 2020 to get all the pictures and data back!

From what I've read the geology is quite a bit different. It's much more rocky, fewer impact craters and doesn't have those large dark areas we can see on our side.

Opportunity landed on Mars more than 15 Earth years ago, on January 25, 2004. So much time has passed since then. Facebook would not be created until a month later. YouTube would not get its first video upload for more than a year. George W. Bush was still in his first presidency. NASA's Cassini spacecraft had not yet even arrived in the Saturn system.

Can't really complain about the mission though. Amazing stuff.

Yeah staggering stuff. To think it would only last 90 days and design experiments for that and then find it keeps going and going and nearly 15 years later you call it a day is brilliant work.
I would dearly love someone to send a rover somewhere else though. I want to see Venus or Io or Europa up close.

With all the apollo anniversary stuff going on, I remembered I had this as a kid. Pretty certain it's still at my mums somewhere.

Utterly brilliant analysis of every part of the radio comms and what was involved in doing what they did.
