Saw this just the other day - surprised its not more widely known:

http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

New PC space sim made by the guy who made Wing Commander and Freelancer.

It's crowd-funded and looks like having a monthly subscription option - an single player or multi with co-op etc. Sounds too like players can end up with systems named after them that they find in exploration.

Might as well place this here.
Wobbly- Kickstarter topic wrote:If you liked Wing Commander, Descent: Freespace, Privateer and Freelancer, but running on Cry Engine 3, it looks amazing.

Two games but same universe, The first is Star Citizen, which is a multiplayer universe that is promised to be ever-expanding. Players will be able to follow different paths be it military or merchant, with encouragement for exploring, fighting or trading.
The second title will effectively be an offline mode called Squadron 42, which will involve single or coop play through a branching campaign similar to Wing Commander.

All ready been in Dev for a year before public release
And almost 10 million raised so far.

Was just about to start a new thread about this, anyone keeping up on it? I only found out about it a few days ago when reading it mentioned that it will support the Rift. I was a big X-Wing and Tie Fighter fan when I was at school, not so much Wing Commander but this looks like it could be really good.

I'm thinking of making a pledge to give a bit of support, get the chance to try the alpha and beta and to get a ship up front. Cheapest option this way is 40 USD for base ship the Aurora, I actually want an Origin 300i but it's like 65 USD and I can't justify that. 40 bucks isn't too bad I think when the retail version will probably be 80-90.

If this is a hyped up version of Freelancer, I'll be there with big fucking bells on. Logged many an hour in Freelancer. Loved the concept.

I sent off $40 to them a few months ago. Looking forward to it. Would love a Rift to go with it.

Think like Eve, all the ships you can get ingame but this is just a quicker way getting to what you want to do.

Have you looked and played around with the hanger/plane/ship yet?

I have an Aurora package as well. I'll get other ships in game if needed once I figure out how it plays and which ship would be best for me.

They release a few vids a week on their youtube channel to let you know what they're up to.

This certainly looks good and I look forward to its release, but I won't be pre-purchasing. I'm all tapped out on that front, everything I've pre-purchased in the last year or more has been a disappointment so I'll wait for the dust to settle and read reviews of the full product and pay the premium if I think it's worth it when the time comes, now I just want them to hurry up and finish it so I don't have to wait too long. :p

I've the small starter package, too - will see how it goes.
p.s. amazing how much money they're raking in, still...

I have developed a bit of pre-purchase remorse with this...

I'm still tossing up whether to get Aurora package, will keep an eye on how many alpha/beta slots are left and maybe try and wait it out till the dogfighting module is out and some impressions are in. The dogfighting module should be something good to have a play with when my Oculus DK2 arrives.

I could see this game would be great to play with a bunch of friends as an organisation, build up to a few capital ships and go on missions with a full crew and a some escorts but it's unlikely I'll ever be able to devote that much time to it.

Apparently the retail version will probably come as packages with a ship similar to the pledge packages so your only saving yourself about 20 USD but able to play the beta/alpha and help support the cause. I do like the idea of a developer being able to develop a game without publisher pressure but I couldn't sink hundreds into it like some have already.

whoa...haven't heard about half of those. What's that Elite title? Is that something to do with the orig. Elite? (my all-time favourite space game!)

Yes.

Some of the same people who made the original are working on this new version.

Elite Dangerous has full rift support as well

No Man's Sky is apparently a bit minecraft like in that the worlds are procedurally generated and you gather resources to make things. You start on the edge of the universe and it gets harder as you move to the center, but there's no particular goal. Doesn't appear to have been anything posted about it for 3 months though.

There will be a live stream for the launch/presentation of the dog fighting module from PAX at 11am Sydney time. IIRC they said it will be playable for people at PAX then they'll release it for alpha members 1-2 weeks after.

That was a bit of a mess. They should have had more pre-recoded footage to show off the new stuff. Roberts tried to show it by playing the game and it kept crashing so it was all a bit haphazard.

It looks stunning though.
