Another car recommendation thread

Post by DexterPunk »

Hey all.

My old man is after a new (used) car. Since he has no idea what an internet is, or how to use it, I said I'd help him look. I thought you guys would have a lot of great advice too.

He's always had Falcons before. So he's likely interested in something like that. He reckons he wants under 100,000 kms (obviously less is better), and looking at $20k max.

What do you guys think about the XR6/turbo? G6E? Or Toyota Aurion Sportivo?

Otherwise we may even look at a Forester or similar smaller 4x4. The car needs to be able to tow a reasonable sized caravan from time to time.

Advise and suggestions would be fantastic.

If he wants something powerful but reliable you can't go wrong with an fg xr6t but if you want power/reliability/luxury the g6et is a perfect balance. Obviously I'm going based on my f6 which did blow a motor but was running 400rwkw at the time and I assume your dad wouldn't be wanting that lol. From what I have heard the worst thing in an fg is the driving position and the diff bush craps itself early but other than that I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Xr6t and g6 are both good cars. Depending on whats being towed both could use stiffer rear springs/dampers. They are soft for comfort standard and do noticeably sag when towing a decent weight.

Have heard good things about the Aurion.

Another car recommendation thread

The caravan would be 1300kg max when loaded with crap.

I just had a look at insurance on the xr6t and it was fairly huge even for a pensioner who drives less than 10,000km a year :(

I think I'll rule out any turbo engines. At the moment it looks like G6E, XR6 (N/A), maybe an XR8. Still looking at reviews of the Aurion, but I wonder if it would have enough torque compared to the others. Silly old bastard won't consider a Holden :S

Shaun I reckon an FG would go for too much for him.

Aurion has decent power, however I would be looking at the AWD one. I think towing anything with FWD is a terrible idea.

The N/A 6cyl Fords certainly will tow it. I would be suprised if the XR8 was any better on insurance than XR6t, mind you my insurance isn't too bad considering my age.

Again though, the G6E being luxury I imagine if anything would be softer than an XR6. For towing a caravan I would definitely be looking at upgrading rear springs/shocks.

Also as Shaun mentioned for FG, you will find that towing will put a lot of stress on the drivetrain and even the B series diffs/bushes are not very strong.

Quickly checked Coles and the fast quote feature suggested $1200 a year for an xr6t and $1000 for the xr8.

I'll keep looking/reading. Thanks for the advise on towing. It's only a once a year thing, but something that it needs to be capable of none the less.

For what its worth I was recently quoted $20k for an Omega with about 60,000 on the clock.
(So I sprung the extra 2 grand and went for the V8 with 80,000 kays on it!)

Yeah, wether it's true or not, I've always thought a v8 would be a stronger engine and slightly more k's wouldn't be as bad.

How much does a VE series II SV6 go for? With the 3.6, it should be great for towing.

If he's always had Falcons then there's no reason to look beyond a G6E. Don't need a turbo - the old inline 6 is still a very torquey engine, much better down low than any of the Commodore 6s. And the G6E will be a nice enough place to sit for him if Falcons are all he's really lived with.

There's even some low km SS v8's floating around. I highly doubt he will consider a Holden though. Ridiculous in my opinion.

Cheers Exar. The G6E is where we started and may end up.

Well it seems the XR6 was what he preferred. Thanks for all the input. I'd have preferred he got an XR8, XR6 T, or G6E, but then I'm not the one to own it. It came down to the fact, that for the money, he could get lower Km's and a better condition car with the XR6. I'll chuck up a couple of pics for fun when it arrives. It's a red FG 2011 with 62,000 on the clock.

There are a lot of FG xr6's. Very rare to see an xt FG that isn't a taxi.

A guy I know bought the FG xr6 brand new. It's dropped in value something shocking.

Nice car though :)

Out of curiosity, 5 or 6 speed auto?

It's a six speed auto. Really nice condition car too. $18990 from a ford dealer including all on road costs etc and a year warranty.

Just a few quick snaps for fun with obligatory vignetting. Not a bad looking car. Certainly a much better car than the old EA Falcon he didn't seem to want to let go of.

Magnificent interior shot, with the wet exterior. Love it.

EA to FG would be a decent step!

Exar, yeah that car although mechanically great, was time go. Now I've got the difficult job of trying to help him sell it.

Yep, the good old Aussie family car has come a long way when the base models lay down easy 7 second 0-100 times. Unfortunately they still sound like a vacuum cleaner whilst doing it :p
