HTPC Software
I'm in the process of planning my first HTPC build and I would like to get peoples thoughts on what software to use. I'd like to steer clear of Windows Media Centre as it looks ugly. Currently I like the look and feel of XBMC however don't really know what else is out there?
What do you gents use?

Re: HTPC Software
I use XBMC, its really good for just playing back previously downloaded stuff, recording/watching tv its a bit poor..
that being said, no reason to build a HTPC for XBMC, just buy a rasberrypi! costs $50 and supports CEC so you can control it with your TV remote.
Only problem is you need a server/NAS for storage

XBMC FTW!!!
Also have a read of this post of how my HTPC is setup: http://www.arseforums.com/phpBB/viewtop ... 74#p360867" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hit me up if you have any questions when you get to using it.

How many people are using Xbmc for live tv? I still use widows media centre just for the live tv, as I tried Xbmc about a year ago and found it very slow and clunky. Has it changed much?

Re: HTPC Software
I must be the only person still using Mediaportal, since the 1.5 update it's improved a lot but it can be a bit of a chore to setup initially with the myriad of settings in the configuration editor, occasionally I fire up XBMC on my HTPC but never seem to find anything worth making the switch for.

Re: HTPC Software
The new version of XBMC (Frodo) main focus was to improve the live TV functionality. But I haven't tried it.plastik8 wrote:How many people are using Xbmc for live tv? Re: HTPC Software
Thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like I'll go with my first choice, XBMC. It's my birthday in a couple of weeks, I'll have to start dropping hints to the better half
