Formula E

Post by Duke »

I couldn't find a thread on Formula E so I've started this one...
But are they serious??? I'm not sure who's responsible for this demo but it does nothing to promote the upcoming Formula E series.

That's because the FE is not an off-road model like your r/c car.

Yep me too, it's a very important step if we are to believe the hype around electric vehicles becoming mainstream... :aussie:

Frig, useless search didn't find that... mind you it is way back in 2012.

Can an admin combine them???

Flinty, Board search is limited, but either way it is ok.

Pro search... site: http://arseforums.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Formula E

Neil, depending on the body it could be a match.

i have a real fascination with electric racing. It won't replace the internal combustion engine any time soon but there's certainly a place for it with it's own racing and it's exciting to watch it develop from really big bulky engines and batteries to nicely packaged machines. I watched the movie Charge the other night and it was terrific. It looks at the new category at the IOMTT. One of the riders was saying it's a very different experience because you can feel the road better without an engine vibrating and dulling the feedback from the road, and also that it's very peaceful like you are flying.

I met one of the guys from Catavolt in Newcastle, who retrofit bikes with electric drivetrains. They're also getting into the business of selling brand new electric bikes. Got to have a look at his daily ride - it was a very cool bike, with VERY quick acceleration!

They took one of their bikes to Lake Gairdner, SA a few years ago to try and set the land speed record for an electric bike. Apparently they got laughed at when they showed up. The laughter stopped when the thing did 177km/h!

I'm pumped for Formula E. Would love to, and might some day, build and electric car myself. They would need to become a little more mainstream friendly though. An electrical engineer I'm not.

Ex-Formula 1 drivers Sebastien Buemi, Karun Chandhok, Lucas di Grassi, Tonio Liuzzi and Takuma Sato, plus IndyCar race winner Marco Andretti, have put themselves forward to race in Formula E.
At least there will be a lot of crashese to watch!

This will be Formula 1 one day but not while oil is still at high levels. They could make electric cars now with good range and as we know from F1 there's KERS, and ERS coming, for harvesting electricity. It's still easier to make money from oil though and this will hold back electric cars. They've been around since the 1890's but some Arab won't make shit loads of money from it.

I wonder if the flame suits will continue to be necessary with this series? I doubt the risk of battery explosion is enough to really warrant it, so we might see some different clothes being worn. Would be funny to see someone just get in with shorts and a tee.

Wiring failures can easily cause fires, batteries and electronics in general can be very dangerous things when they go wrong. Depending on the technology they are using, most common lithium cells decompose fast, excess energy in the battery can only be dissipated as heat, which can melt lithium sheets and cause severe reactions.

When I built my lifepo4 powered bike I had early wiring failures that caused minor fires, I sorted it out in the end but at first it was probably more dangerous than using a petrol engine, lifepo4 is very stable compared to most other high drain lithium setups so I didn't have the issues of batteries exploding, but downside to this safety is the battery life cycle is usually about 3 years and they are quite heavy. Cars usually use square shaped lithium cells where they overlap the lithium foil and then slot each one into a grid, as opposed to multiple rounded cells individually placed and sealed. I don't know the type of battery technology formula e are using, but at 800V and the possibility some cars will be using super-capacitors I wouldn't want to be in something these guys are running if something went wrong

they sound like RC cars. The good thing is if your radio breaks you could just yell out to your team as you go down the front straight. 'MY TYRES ARE KNACKERED I'LL COME IN NEXT LAP'

A friend of mine that used to commentate on our GRC races is doing commentary for this series I think.
