I am still a bit confused by this. Prior to the Obama admin putting this into law, there was no enforceable law as far as I know. So were the ISPs just not taking advantage?

Also, looking at the big companies that were for Net Neutrality, like FB, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix etc, I dont know if I trust any of them. What do they gain, or now lose?

Yeah of course they were. Because to get to their services you have to go through someone else controlling the gates.

That doesn't make any sense, the DNS is such a tiny part of overall traffic, plus I use google's DNS. Any major site has servers outside of the US, and I'd expect any other's to move their servers outside the US is this effects them.

I did not look too deep into this, and thus I'd love an explanation on that one, too, Wabbit.
DNS is local. All it does is it translates "arseforums.com" to an IP address. It's also heavily cached, so even if the authoritative answer would be a US server, your DNS query may not even leave Australia. Hell it may not even leave your computer after the first query.
Routing is not DNS dependent.
So I just don't get what you're saying, wabs. Please explain.

My point was over "control" sure the US and AU currently have different types of control but really it's very similar shit as we've had metadata retention laws from late 2015.

My thinking is Aussie's apparently kicked up a stink when our metadata was going to be tracked, yet it still happened. The US had a big song and dance over net neutrality... yet it happened. I see the common element as a "business first" (surely there's a better term for it) political parties in power. Honestly, hand on heart why would people thing Aus isn't "next" regarding net neutrality? The US just green lit simply put a metric fuck-ton of new monetisation opportunities.

Yes, it may happen here - and I expect a lot less fuss will be needed over it. The metadata retention went through smoothly, why wouldn't this.

Mind you DNS technically still does not enter into this picture, in my opinion. It's about routing & throttling data as far as I know.

We don't have net neutrality anyway, so I can't see it changing much for us.

People are going through the Net Neutrality comments and finding a lot of interesting things. Like pro-repeal comments from people who are long dead. And one that was found today from Barack Obama (which could be illegal as it's considered as impersonating a President)
