Dry absolutely.

As big as you're willing to upload gents. There's a fair Chance I'll combine several images for the textures.

JPEGs are fine. Ideally the images won't have strong shadows across them. The game engine generates all that, so you want them to be as clean as possible. I would think overcast conditions would be ideal as there's a much softer light source.

Hey Righty, I have to learn some 3D modeling for work. New high end machine has been delivered and some software will be purchased soon. Specifically... this software http://www.agisoft.ru/products/photoscan/professional/. The main use for it right now, is going to be using Photogrammetry to construct models/mesh of anatomy from the museum, and plastinated specimen at Melb Uni. The aim is to eventually output the models to a webpage if possible, so that they can be moved around, and used for teaching/lectures or by students, and possibly a program running at the uni called Anatomedia. There's various software that I've been directed to at work for editing mesh etc, and I have a contact of someone who can help me (i'm sure he'll get sick of me before too long). I'm a complete noob, but since I need to learn this, I thought, well... I have an Impreza in the drive. Maybe I'll look at using the software to create a basic model of a 2004 Impreza. Which I'd no doubt turn into a WRX STi :) Would I well and truly be jumping in the deep end? I figure If I'm working on 3D stuff anyway, this would be a good side project to help the learning curve for other work related projects.

Righty, I will do a wander around during the week.

Might give yo a call to see what is best for you.

Hey Dex,

It's probably as good a place as any to start. You'll learn a lot along the way and it's better to have a project to learn with rather than just trying to "learn 3D". But, looking at the software you've linked, that doesn't appear to be a modelling program exactly, more like something that scans images to generate the models.

Or did I miss something and you plan on learning another piece of software along side it?

Cheers Norbs, that would be awesome. Honestly, anything you can point at really. I took a couple on my phone today, I was hoping to get a chance to use the DSLR but it didn't present itself.

But I think the more you can get of road textures the better. I am hoping to find an overpass somewhere myself where I can get a photo looking down on a highway from a higher perspective. Just plodding around you can't get a wide enough shot holding the camera I don't think.

Painted lines would be awesome and edges of road.

This is what I took on my phone. They are crappy out of focus examples, but that's what I'm going for. Especially some white lines.

I also discovered they are better as clean as possible. These probably won't work because of all the leaves.

Yeah it can create a mesh from images from various angles. That is primarily what we would be trying to do, they have had more luck using that technique than laser scanning objects. And yeah, there's various other software you can use alongside it to fine tune and edit further.

So I've been plugging away with this. Not much to report really as it's all just boring UV mapping stuff, so the track looks much as it did last update. However, I did build myself a little test area to test some of the assets I've been making such as fences, telegraph poles, armco, pits etc.

Some may get a kick out of this little vid more than others. :D

All we need is the cars :D

In the old LFS days you could crank up the suspesion, I don't know that there's any cars in AC yet that will let you do that.

Brilliant idea.

Righty, go into you options settings and look for this.

Options > View > (un check) lock onboard camera to horizon.

I only found it the other day and it was on by default, now when i roll it the camera goes upside down like it should.

Ahhhhh excellent. I will do that.

I'm going to try a larger radius next time. Perhaps I'll have more success. :D

Make a tunnel or have it loop straight back like a long U on it's side and see if the formula cars can drive upside down :)

I don't think any sim has been able to do that yet. rFactors tyre physics didn't work past vertical. Doesn't look very promising based on that loop though.

This all reminds me of the old school PC game "Stunts"
Man so many hours blown on that one as a kid.

Yep, there were some hilarious glitches that would accelerate your car to enormous speeds too. I used to love building tracks in that game. Just so simple to do.

I had two mates at school that were into it heavily. We use to make mazes with one one completable route, all the other routes were dead end jumps into buildings, windmills or other objects.

So much fun trying to confuse your mates with crazy tracks.

You would probably be surprised by how easy AC is if you've got a bit of 3D knowledge behind you. Getting models into the game is pretty straight forward and as long as your surfaces have the correct names it takes very little time to get things up and going.

If you can model things and understand UV mapping, you're 90% of the way there.

Thanks Nutty, that's the one.

I will attempt to get the loop drive-able :D

SO the loop was a failure :D

But, I managed to spend a few hours on the track yesterday.

Thanks to Mick for the footbridge and a couple of small buildings around the outside of the track.

It's getting there slowly. Once I start to get some vegetation and more track side objects, it should start coming to life. Almost all the hard work is done now, before I can start to bling it up.
