Finally, some sanity:

Followed by some insanity:

When everyone else is trying to get bodies repatriated and negotiate a means to get the relevant parts from the crash scene (spread out over 10 kms), someone tries to make political capital out of it.

Fucking nationalists. I don't care what side they're on, this is how wars start or escalate.

Some cooler-headed analysis, if a little brief:

Good grief. Has he been reading Dubya's (colouring) book? That's almost the exact phrase Bush used after 9/11 to kick start the ever-so-successful war on terrorâ„¢.

Malaysian airlines aren't taking any dangerous goods after this. Not sure the logic behind it.

So that makes three, although KAL007 was shot down by a fighter.

I was telling a mate about IA655 the other day. The Rogers, the captain of the USS Vincennes, was publicly backed by Bush Snr but as soon as it all died down he was quickly relegated to a training unit to reflect. For a skipper, that's only one step shy of being cashiered. The Navy knew what happened better than anyone and made sure Rogers got his lumps. He would have expected to be promoted out of the field to at least Commodore, maybe Rear Admiral but Rogers retired on a Captain's pension.

KAL007, which I remember very well, has been the subject of a lot of speculation and the odd conspiracy theory, some of which have a fair bit of credibility behind them. I have my own but it's not really relevant to the topic. I just wish people would either stop shooting down civilian airliners or that airlines would stop transiting war zones.

No indications yet as to what happened.
