Honestly I can't see why they can't be ridden on the roads as per normal cycles I can totally understand footpaths etc. But the fun police will have their ways just imagine the outcry If cyclists were forced to ride single file

Totally agree. They should be allowed on the road.richo wrote:Honestly I can't see why they can't be ridden on the roads as per normal cycles I can totally understand footpaths etc. But the fun police will have their ways just imagine the outcry If cyclists were forced to ride single file

To do with inadequate brakes according to the RMS and TfNSW.

Re: Petrol powered bikes banned in NSW...
I can understand the safety concern... how e-bikes got out of it... I don't know. I guess they can't sustain 40km/h for nearly as long as a petrol bike.
Creating policy and standards to deal with "X bike is permitted for use on Australian roads" is a lot harder (more expensive) than saying "No bike...".
Maybe just saying "must have disc brakes" would have been a clear enough rule that's easy to police.

I think ebikes are supposed to be limited to 25kph but a lot of people disconnect the limiter. Mind will only do 25 in full electric mode but it's unlimited on pedal assist mode. But I also have disc brakes and it stops fine from any speed.

Re: Petrol powered bikes banned in NSW...
I've seen e-bikes do 80km/h. There's no brake that can stop it without better tires.
I reckon a proper regulation would be in order - i.e. licensing for all motorised vehicles, be it an e-bike, motorised one, or a scooter, or whatever, really.
But the simple ban is a very easy, cheap way out, I can see the appeal of this solution from the gov't angle. They might do this temporarily until they can work out a proper regulatory scheme.
