The day I hate the most looms again

Post by smithcorp »

Melbourne Bloody Cup Day.

I dread this day as it approaches each year and I make plans to absent myself from all its accompanying phony bullshit.

The wall to wall TV coverage, the phenomenon where everyone is suddenly a horse-racing expert, whose Aunty has picked the last 10 years' winners (except for this year as it turns out), the morning queues at the TAB, the under/over dressed bogans who believe that squalid, corrupt horse-racing is the sport of Kings, Spring Fashions, fucking fascinators, Melbourne Cup lunches, office sweeps and drunks spewing on the train home.

Hate it.

Well, that pretty much sums up my opinion on the spring cup carnival....

I can't stand it either. The office throws a party for the afternoon and I usually just work through it. Take the betting away from horse racing and it'd be an incredibly unpopular sport. My brother works for Paddy Power in Dublin (owner of Sportsbet here) and he gets along to most of the big racing events - pretty much just to dress up and drink a lot.

Yeah, not my cup of tea either. That's not to say that it shouldn't be a public holiday everywhere in Australia. I wouldn't mind another day off, and Melbournian Midget Horse Beating Day sounds as legit as any for me.

You should try working there...

The entire Spring Racing Carnival is a nightmare for anyone in my job.

But for bad crowd behaviour, I reckon the Caulfield Cup is actually worse.

I prefer to think of it as Silly Hat Day.

Didn't see many silly hats in Sydney cbd the last couple years compared to what it used to be like. I guess it's popularity has waned.

Apparently they are fascinators.

I reckon men should try them too, but something super manly, like a besser block or an anvil!

Nice to have 4-day weekends for a birthday though.

I get a 5 day weekend because the CFMEU decided to hold off an rdo for a week or two and use it for the Monday, and use the one after the cup on the Wednesday to bookend Tuesdays public holiday.

I don't know why the grand final isn't a public holiday instead. I guess it's because it's on a Saturday. But we could have the Friday or Monday off.
