SSD without a HDD?
Hey all,
Ive heard and read plenty of conflicting arguments to this.
If im only building the PC for 2-3 games and little else other than the OS, can i just have a 120gb ssd on its own? Or do i need to have a hdd aswell?
Cheers,
Tim

Re: SSD without a HDD?
Zero need for HDD if you don't want data. Besides, it's extremely easy to add later.
Having said that, any storage always looks much bigger at the start... I'd go with a 256+ sized one

Yeah, I reckon 256GB would be a better bet if that's all you're going with. As mentioned, they are dirt cheap for a regular HDD if you ever wanna add one. About $90 for 2TB from memory.

Yeah. Standard HDD's are cheap but im just trying to keep costs down for the initial build and put most of the money toward gpu and cpu.

Re: SSD without a HDD?
I still like to keep my games on a separate drive to the OS.
Call me old fashioned but I like the fact that the OS drive is only for running essential services & programs. Leaving my game drive purely for when I game.
But yes SSD is the only way to go these day for the OS as a minimum.
Extra SSD(s) for games is also great if you can afford them & don't need heaps of storage size.
An alternative is to look at a Hybrid Drive, not as fast as a SSD but good storage size as well as faster than a regular HDD

You aren't going to be left with that much room on a 128gb SSD when you install your OS, some essential programs and a game or three.
In the long run, you really are better off going with a 256gb SSD.

Same. I've always kept windows on a separate partition/drive so I don't have to wipe everything for a re-install.Duke wrote:I still like to keep my games on a separate drive to the OS.
I've got 3 SSD's now. A 120 for windows stuff, a 250 for steam + a couple other games (always getting full), and another 120 for linux. Not really a low cost option though

I have that one... I like it (even if my computer isn't using it to it's full potential yet. It pretty much halved in price a few months after I bought itpixelboy wrote:buy this.. quick.. only on sale tonight..

Re: SSD without a HDD?
128 is more then enough for starters..
My boot drive- that same Evo 250gig, Os is only using 29gig, rest of the folders on the drive is 34gig leaving 169gig free.
Everything else is on storage drives.

He doesn't want storage drives wobbles. Which is why a few of us agree 250GB would be a better way to go.

As I said said.. 120*gig is more then enough for starters.. in my case it has 63gig free for what ever else.
And unsure about others, my LFS install is only 2gig in size with a number of different skins..
Still leaves 33gig left for what ever, storage or different programs.

My assettocorsa folder is only 18gig but lets go with Darrens and add that to the total.DarrenM wrote:..My Assetto Corsa directory is already 28Gb :o

Re: SSD without a HDD?
Yeah i knew LFS was small. If Darrens AC is up to 28 and the game is still in development (i think??). It will only continue to grow.
On umart i found a 256gb for $135 i think it was a Crucial brand.

Re: SSD without a HDD?
Wobs, put on Bf4 or something similar and there's no space left. Nowadays, when games can be in the tens of gigabytes, 30GB space "leftover" is nothing in my opinion. And say he wants to save a video or two, a few family pictures and a bit of music? All space would be gone in a blink.
Yeah, Timmy, Crucial is the cheapest "good" brand out there nowadays. Of the 256GB+ sizes you can often find around 50c/GB deals. There are often really good deals on amazon or bhphotovideo, if you are willing to risk overseas purchases. Altho pccasegear (rather more reliable shop than umart) has pretty good prices on these, too. Eg: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai ... &cPath=909" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: SSD without a HDD?
Being in QLD, PCCG postage prices are a bit of a turnoff where i can pick up direct from umart (even though the service is shit ive always found the prices competetive). I almost bought a ready built system and monitor from them but postage was north of $100.

Re: SSD without a HDD?
Timmy, mine is only a 17.5gig for AC, not much added to it.. though with LFS, base install it is only around 500mb ish..
