Poor bastard. Same for the bowler.

From what I can gather only a small number of people die from Vertebral Artery Dissection. Only 2% according to Wikipedia.

I think they need to revisit helmet design.

He decided to use an old helmet design that doesn't offer the same level of protection around the sides and back, and has now been outlawed most places, but not yet in Australia.

There was a small report last night about his helmet. Apparently it was superseded by a design that had more protection around the area he was hit. Unfortunately, even if he'd been wearing the new version, they don't think it would have changed the outcome :(

I'm not 100% sure where he was hit. All I know is that it was behind his left ear. But - and norbs' post suggests it - if he was hit on the neck just under the base of his skull, I doubt a cricket helmet of any design would have helped.

Think they said another player recently was also hit in the same area, and is still in a coma.

I work with an anatomist two days a week at Melb uni. He mainly specialises in neurology etc though. And I was having a chat to him about it. He said he thought it was pretty freaky to have that artery split from the impact of a ball considering his age and fitness.

He also said (which I agree with) that it's probably a good thing that he died, had he pulled through, he would have been in a bad way.

When I had my big car accident I got a fairly big smack to the head and was in and out of consciousness for a few hours. I can't remember the crash at all, or anything immediately before it. Had I died that night, I'd never had any concept that I was about to. One minute id have been fine, the next not here and no concept of being gone. I only hope the moment of being hit, and the moments just after, like me, were never registered.

My cousin had a brain aneurysm and he lived. His doctors are amazed he did. He can't remember a month or two leading up to the event. When he woke up he said he thought he'd been a sleep for the night but 12 days had past. Your experience after you crash sounds the same as what my cousin told me the other day Dex.

I like the idea of the Hughes family too. Don't play the first session of the first test and play after lunch. A good way to honour him and do something he loved, play cricket. I just hope the people in Brisbane fill the Gabba for all days. Fill it for Phil. :)

That's a shame as I think they need to get back out there and it would of been an ideal tribute match but I can understand and respect their decision.

Was moving watching my son's under 8 cricket team wearing black arm bands and having a minutes silence today.

Thanks r8.

Going along nicely at the moment. Ishant seems to be the only bowler really taking it to them.

I am sure I saw on Twitter that he had back problems that were hindering his hamstring recovery.

I wouldn't be surprised about his back was causing the hamstring issues. I tweaked the sciatic nerve in my back earlier this year and it was pretty sore in my back but my arse and hamstring felt like I got one hell of a corkie. I did all the stretches Clarke does to free it and it worked, thanks to my physio. Today I think he caught the nerve as it was off to the right side. Mine was left side but that same area in the back. Fuck it hurts as a few of you might know. Trouble is, his will only get worse with age.
