Re: Fallout 4
Would it be possible to move your Fallout 4 install to another hard drive?
Steam supports installs on different drives.

Re: Fallout 4
I don't think it's the drive.
For the in-steam move you need to uninstall/reinstall, though. Last time I've tried that way, steam insisted on downloading the whole thing again, instead of picking up the files from the drive (no idea why).
You can do a move w/o telling steam about it, by using junctions (junction link magic should help).
But I repeat: I don't believe it's the problem, since no other place suffers from drive performance issues.
Edit: hm...unless it's some mildly faulty sectors on the drive, maybe-maybe...but then simply "moving" the files on the same drive, then copying them back should solve that (since a move is really just a re-write of the system allocation).
This, actually, may worth a try...

Interesting - I just checked the event viewr. Many messages like: The IO operation at logical block address 0x522995b0 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\0000003b) was retried.

I would try moving it to a different drive, a SSD.
Here is a video showing how
I just moved my copy to my SSD this way and it improved load times

Based on those events, I'd say there's something wrong with a sector of the drive - or even the whole drive.Cursed wrote:Interesting - I just checked the event viewr. Many messages like: The IO operation at logical block address 0x522995b0 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\0000003b) was retried.
Try to
- move the data away (the data in the "/steamapps/common/Fallout 4" folder)
- copy the data back
This way you duplicate the data at the second step only, thus leaving the original data in place on the drive, hopefully covering the bad parts.
This also means you don't have to do any fiddling around with steam and/or junctions.
If you have another drive and you want to, you can of course try moving to that instead, I just though this is the quickest, simplest trial if there's a somewhat bad sector on the drive causing this.
If it improves things, I'd suggest replacing the drive, it maybe aging or faulty. It's never good to lose a important data while saving $100.
You can of course run all sorts of testers, starting with checkdisk to uncover where the problem maybe, but if it's worth the trouble is your call. I know I'd not bother

According to the Seagate warranty page, I have about a month left on the warranty. I'm going to go through the process of doing a proper low-level check with sea-tools. The suspect blocks might get reallocated. I'll attempt a backup of the drive first.
Thanks everyone for your interest.

Out of interest did the verify game cache pickup any errors?
Try replacing the SATA cable Cursed, I had a bad cable kill two SSDs before I twigged the cable could be the cause a couple of years back.

Did you check the SMART errors count on the HDD?

Re: Fallout 4
Verification of the game cache seems to have alleviated the problem. I'm guessing that the check encountered the read issue, 300MB was downloaded and written again, and all is happy again.
I've run SEATOOLS for windows over it and the disk fails 10% into the short test. I briefly tried the short test under the SEATOOLS for DOS and it went through okay. I'll run the long test overnight and see how it goes.
SMART is enabled but no thresholds have tripped yet.

42 bad sectors repaired. Will do another test tonight to see if it grows.

Well, yes and no. Yes, they're mechanical devices and they degrade with time, so they only ever get worse. No, this may not indicate the thin end of the wedge, because this particular spot on the disk may have always been like that. My experience with these things shows that you need to get interested when known good stuff turns bad or you see an escalating number of bad sectors. That's why I'm going to do some more tests. If it is a failing drive, I'd like to smoke it out before the warranty expires.r8response wrote: Drives only ever get worse

Re: Fallout 4
Back to Fallout 4 a bit, there's an extended 'tips' topic now, it contains really handy stuff.
I haven't read it all to see if spoilers/cheats are in it or not, mind you.

I spent ages just walking around. The atmosphere is great in this game. I turned off music. Massive immersion killer. There's some cool places to be found plodding around.NeilPearson wrote:wow the glowing sea is so cool

No spoilers please! I just visited the doctor and learnt of the Seas existence.
Man I've struggled following the main story, I have done so many side quests I've forgotten the main story line, I had to make an effort last night to get back on the main story because San asked me something I knew nothing about.

You know about it now though! I've finished the main quest:Shonky wrote:No spoilers please! I just visited the doctor and learnt of the Seas existence.

I thought it was pretty good! I've always liked the eerie side quests more than the main in Fallout, so crawling through vaults and buildings is what the fun stuff is for me.

And if you are just interested in what has he "achieved", start at 3:50.
I'm not very impressed. Except with the amount of time wasted...it's really shit to build in fo4, let's be honest, mostly thanks to the controls.

You'll have to wait a long time for that - I'm sticking to the prefabs and fences
Even those are a pain in the arse to put in place.

Re: Fallout 4
I don't do a controller.
I'm not a controller.
I use input devices, one is a keyboard, the other is a mouse. This is a regular pc setup.
I can't stand console controllers, they are useless at controlling anything in my hands.
Big part of the problem is the snapping thing, it does it always in the wrong direction, then when you'd really need it it does not do it...craphouse, honestly.
