Has there been a better time for Sim racing? Is it a bad thing?
I'm amazed at the quality and the amount of content that is available right now for the sim racing community, I don't think there has ever been this much choice, but I'm not sure it's a good thing at the moment.
I own content for iRacing, AC, CARS and Raceing racer raced room and I'm pretty staggered that, besides iRacing, it's pretty hard to find full servers to race people against. Even iRacing, over here, can have its down times. In the LFS days I remember logging in and seeing server after server full of people racing.
Has the sim community gotten smaller, grown up, or are we are spread too thin these days?
I don't know what the younger generation is doing, are kids into Motorsport any more?
There's so much excellent stuff available, but generally, I just can't find anyone to race if I just feel like a pick up race. It's not any better over here really.

Spoiled for choice & options makes me feel we are spread thin... for the hardcore long-term simracing group that is.
I think new people are finding sim-racing for the 1st time with many race-sims now on steam. But I'm not sure they are as serious or as commited to it as us. So they are really only casual racers & don't add significant consistent numbers & are also spread even more thinly.
My opinions are my own & my own only.

Sort of what I was thinking too. I guess I'm just wondering where all the mid 20 somethings are. When I joined ARSE, many of the blokes I raced against were around that age but have no grown up and moved on, but I thought there would be more waiting in the wings.
So I don't know how we can have so much content available if no one is using it? Maybe all the mid 20s got rich and buy the stuff, but don't have time to race it all.
I guess back in the day you were either a LFS guy, an r-Factor guy or you were Dex playing V8 supercars and being world champion at it.......
Before that it was Nascar or GPL right?

Haha I was only ever 5th at v8c leaderboard.
But one of the reasons I was addicted I that game (not much of a sim really) was the lobby system and leaderboards that kept you chatting to guys and trying to improve your times.
I feel like that community aspect is missing in some sims... I suppose iRacing is closest to that kind of environment? I've never tried it.
My rig these days is better than it ever was, I earn more money, but I don't get much time to mess around with it all. Some quick stages in Dirt Rally is about it for me.

They did a big update to Westhill a few months back. Beyond that, it's dead in Australia.c.j wrote:Bring back LFS MNR. I'll play, or have they killed that game?

Ever since LFS went by the wayside, i just lost interest. I had so many great times on LFS and no other sim could replicate it for me. Maybe one day ill pick up a new sim

Oh Timmy, you are seriously missing out mate... All the new sims crap all over LFS & with the ARSE Racing Series & FNF it's not far off what we had in LFS.
Get back into it quick.

Heya Timmy!!
I agree LFS was a great sim back in the day, but like Duke said, the quality of the sims kickin around today is awesome. Of course AC is the best bwahahah!! FNF FTW!!

I disagree, not one sim has got Multiplayer right like S2 hasDuke wrote:Oh Timmy, you are seriously missing out mate... All the new sims crap all over LFS & with the ARSE Racing Series & FNF it's not far off what we had in LFS.

I agree. I think Norbs eluded to it as all the sims are spread thin, so pick up racing is dead. That said, I prefer AC over all of them at the moment and Fridays fill my racing quota for the week.GT VIRUS wrote:I disagree, not one sim has got Multiplayer right like S2 hasDuke wrote:Oh Timmy, you are seriously missing out mate... They all have great multiplayer, what they lack I think is the things that made pickup racing easy and fun - voting for track changes, restarts, administration, text chat, etc.GT VIRUS wrote:I disagree, not one sim has got Multiplayer right like S2 hasDuke wrote:Oh Timmy, you are seriously missing out mate... Agreed, I did enjoy the simplicity that LFS brought with the multiplayer. Everything was quick to do, share a set, change track, car etc.

I've spent a majority of the afternoon going through old hard disks and setting up our cloud device, came across a bag load of shots from LFS. I'll only share two to keep it reasonable but good times, thanks to Knappo for sending me this pack years ago and Vil (I think) for the render and the skin.

Re: Has there been a better time for Sim racing? Is it a bad thing?
I never played LFS but I did play Nascar 2003 on lan and it was like FNF. Dirty asred moves, massive crashes and laugh till your face was sore.
But it use to be the old EA F1 series, GPL and Nascar. rFactor was good and some of the rally games were ok. Now we are spoilt. AC and CARS are great. So much can be done in AC and CARS is good for it's content without chasing downloads.
I'm still quite pissed off with iRacing though, nice idea and some good racing but it's way too expensive and a content release that's bullshit.
