Re: 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship
With the new regulations only formally announced today, already Aston Martin and Toyota have confirmed their participation in the first season of these cars.
Aston Martin Vice President and Chief Special Operations Officer, David King:
“The FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans represent the ultimate challenge for the Aston Martin Valkyrie – the world’s most extreme hypercar. Designed and built with the purpose of pushing boundaries on the road, it’s natural to conclude that the next stage in its development would be to measure its capabilities on the track. I can think of no better way to do that than to compete in a world championship and the most prestigious and famous race of all.”
Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO, Andy Palmer:
“We have always said that we would one day bring Aston Martin back to Le Mans with the intention of going for the outright win when the time was right – now is that time. David Brown came here in 1959, with a car and a team of drivers capable of winning. We intend to do the same in 2021. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is primed for such a challenge and sits perfectly within the ACO’s new ‘hypercar’ rule framework. Bringing to bear all of our previous experience and knowledge of competing at the top levels of motorsport, we embark on this most ambitious project with the necessary ingredients for success. What could be more evocative than the wail of an Aston Martin V12 leading the charge into the night on the Mulsanne straight? ”
Shigeki Tomoyama, GAZOO Racing Company President:
“I am pleased to confirm that TOYOTA GAZOO Racing will continue its challenge in endurance racing beyond the current regulations. Thank you to the ACO and FIA for their hard work in finalising these regulations, which we hope will bring about a new golden age of endurance racing, with several manufacturers fighting for Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship. For TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, this new era of competition is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate our credentials not only as a race team against some of the best in the business, but also as a sportscar manufacturer. I am sure I join fans and competitors in welcoming the new regulations and looking forward to an exciting era of competition in WEC and at Le Mans.”
Alongside commitments from Aston Martin and Toyota, it is understood that current LMP1 privateer outfit ByKolles are also planning an assault on the series for the 2020/21 season, with the squad confirming they plan to sit out next year in order to focus preparations of the new car.

It's going to be interesting to see who else might enter..
Would also be great to see the Brabham compete. Maybe in GTE.

The start of LeMans is always spectacular no matter how many times you've watched in the past.
The GTE Pro battle is so intense, great to hear they are no longer held to a prescribed stint length this year.

GTE was amazing last night..
On the first lap there was 35 overtakes for position! The first lap! That's more than any F1 race!

They hardly focused on the LMP cars at all at the start, I think they showed nearly the whole first lap watching the GTE's battle. I think the only really interest is in GTE these days as LMP1 is a ghost town.

LMP1 certainly isn't as interesting as 5 yrs ago unfortunately.
I'm not sure Norbs, quite a few I'm sure. But no need for DRS or other rubbish.

They seem to have the GT-E balance right, although Aston Martin might say different. Those first few hours were great in GT-E!

Yeah I think AMR got shafted which is a shame.
The lack of incidents & retirements is impressive this year. Be intersting to see if it continues for the last 9 hrs.

Re: RE: Re: 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship
It was actually the teams as there are 3 individual SC's due to the length of the track. So a car can gain or loose up to 2 mins depending on where & which SC bunch they are behind when it is called.norbs wrote:Seemed odd earlier they were saying people comained about the amount of safety cars. But it is a good point as they are less frequently getting bunched together using the FCY system this year.

Been like that for the last few years nutty. But I do like Carlton Kirby's snide remarks at times.
You can try to turn the Eurosport audio off & stream the Radio LeMans commentary in the background. But then you don't get the car sounds synced to the visual broadcast.

Ford's doing a heap of Car-cams, running their live timing and 4-car stream along with Radio LeMans in the background all day.

Wow, the #7 looks to have lost the lead due to a electronic sensor glitch. Now the outright race win is on.

Well it's all over now barring any mechanical issue. So let the conspiracy theories begin.
I feel for the #7 team as they showed they had the measure of their sister team.

Yes the #7 deserved to win, no there was no conspiracy.
Great races as usual! Great to see Ferrari win again.

I've been to the race nine times now, and when we've watched the start at the track, it's always looked like this:Duke wrote:The start of LeMans is always spectacular no matter how many times you've watched in the past.
Therefore, we usually watch it on telly from the beer tent back at camp
That said, the atmosphere there in the couple of hours or so before the race is wonderful. The French national anthem is a brilliant thing to hear sung by tens of thousands of people.
OK, you could be organised and not just rock up to try and find a spot five minutes before it starts.

Never mind the #7 conspiracy, how about ACO handing Ferrari a win for the 70th anniversary? In no way did that nosecose need changing!
