The new variety, Vegemite Blend 17, is sold in achingly artisanal packaging that includes an unnecessary cardboard box, a gold-colored lid and a price tag more than double that of a traditional jar, coming in at 7 Australian dollars, or nearly $5.50.

I can't force that thing down anyway (I reckon you need to grow up with it to tolerate it), so I don't really care if connoisseurs enjoy it in special packaging

My speculation is that someone fell asleep at the levers and messed up a few batches. Once proven edible, they decided sell it as a special run.
