Facts from the last race
In 2001 Monza had a makeover: The first corner was reshaped into the tight turn it is today. Remarkably, the 2018 race was the first of the 18 races held since then that home favourites Ferrari swept the front row of the grid.

Unfortunately for them, this wasn’t the prelude to their first win in front of the Tifosi since Fernando Alonso’s 2010 triumph. This eight-year win-less streak is their longest ever drought on home ground.

Ferrari also went eight years without a Monza victory between Jody Scheckter’s 1979 success and Gerhard Berger’s 1988 win. But Monza wasn’t Italy’s only F1 race at that time: Ferrari took home wins at Imola in the 1982 and 1983 San Marino Grands Prix.

Instead Lewis Hamilton gave Mercedes their fifth consecutive win in the Italian Grand Prix, extending a record they already held. They rubbed it in on the victory lap, telling their drivers to parade side-by-side around the circuit.

At least Kimi Raikkonen got to be the first driver in something other than a Mercedes to lead a lap of this race for the first time in five years, when Sebastian Vettel won for Red Bull. He also broke Juan Pablo Montoya’s 14-year-old record for the fastest lap ever seen in Formula 1 on his way to pole position.

In his 284 race career to date Raikkonen has had far fewer pole positions (18) than fastest laps (46). Raikkonen now has as many pole positions as former Ferrari drivers Rene Arnoux and Mario Andretti – the latter scored the final pole position of his career at Monza 36 years ago.

Raikkonen also became the fifth driver in F1 history to reach 100 podiums. He joins Michael Schumacher (155), Hamilton (128), Vettel (107) and Alain Prost (106). The next-highest driver is Fernando Alonso on 97, though he hasn’t finished on the podium since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hamilton set the fastest lap of the race on his way to victory. Despite the track record falling, his best lap of 1’22.479 was 1.4 seconds off the race lap record, set by Rubens Barrichello in 2004.

It’s been a desperate run of races for Renault-bound Daniel Ricciardo, who’s only finished two of the last six rounds. Red Bull hasn’t scored points with both cars in any of the last six races, something which last happened in 2009.

Sergey Sirotkin took 10th place and the first point of his F1 career. Russia’s third F1 driver joins his predecessors Vitaly Petrov and Daniil Kvyat as a point scorer.

The Williams driver was promoted to 10th place following the disqualification of Romain Grosjean. Disqualifications are rare in Formula 1: The last driver to be excluded from the race results was Felipe Massa, when his pre-start tyre temperatures and pressures were found to be too high at the 2015 Brazilian Grand Prix.

I was there in 2016, it's an amazing facility and pretty special to see them running around at night.

It's expensive as fuck, though.

I went before they had the Grand Prix but the last sentence was certainly true then. £9 for a pint of rubbish lager if I remember rightly.

Earlier that day one of our group decided to get a round of Singapore Slings. He came back with a stunned look, a pale face and £100 lighter in the wallet. :D

Was supose to go over for work Monday>Wednesday this week but one of the other guys got the gig.. he did the pit/track walk on Thursday and has grandstand for the weekend.. super jealous

Anyway...... These cars were so damn fast last night :eyepop: Credit where credit is due, it was an awesome lap to get pole. Even though I don't like him, he can do the business when needed.

I only had one night in Singapore so we may have just been unlucky. It took us ages to find a decent bar in the first place.

9 seconds faster is insane but the cars do look impressive there this year.

What a Qual, Lewis best lap ever IMHO & close to perfection by the looks.
The grid is very spicy, Verstappen ain't going to give a shit about the championship, just hope he doesn't do something stupid.
The lap time progression is insane but remember the old layout had an extra chicane hence the 9 sec difference.

Singapore GP, the race to see who can win by going the slowest...
Unless the last 10 laps change this will be one of the most shit boring GP's in history.
And WTF Sirotkin... He must bring a truckload of cash as he has no clue. Mind you Perez should know better given the pedigree some believe he has.

It had some entertaining stuff towards the end but yeah, pretty dull really.

Can anyone see Ferrari coming back from here? It seems they've run out of steam.

There have been some enjoyable races this year, but this one showed how shit the current aero/tyre formula really is. Perez on new tyres couldn't get passed a Williams. Then at the end Dan looked like he was trying for a lap record but wasn't leaving enough gap. He'd drop back 4.5 seconds then catch to 1.2 seconds before the end of the lap. The 3 of them bottle necked because Bottas couldn't get within 2 seconds of the Renault. Means a 5-6 second lap time advantage wasn't enough to be able to overtake.

Ferrari seem to still have the pace but they're killing their tyres. Either that or just getting suckered into pitting too early like at Monza.

Yeah it feels like F1 is really lost and just waiting for 2021. The whole combo is just a bit of wack.

You have this super Aero high downforce cars that cant follow each other (which they tried to cut back with the 2009 rules), super complex engine packages that have lead to the domination of a single team. It seems Pirelli cant get the combination right, most races are 1 stop races with drivings having to pace to make it through.

They have a lot to get right in 2021

There are aero changes for next year to try to fix it. 2021 will hopefully fix the engine issue and bring more engine manufacturers and teams into the sport.

To Bottas: At the moment the gap to Hulkenberg 1.7.
Bottas: I just can’t get any closer, I lose so much grip.
To Bottas: Copy that. At the moment Charlie’s saying we need 1.2.
Bottas: That 1.2 is fucked up in a track like this.

That was for the blue flags I think. He was moaning they weren't blue flagging Hulkenberg but the team were saying he was too far back. Brundle said on the Sky commentary that the street layout means the turbulent air stays trapped between the walls so you're affected by it for a much longer distance.

When he was moaning about not being able to get within 1.2secs of the Renault he had Kimi 0.7 secs behind him. So either Bottas was whinging like Perez or the Merc can't run close to other cars as well as the Ferrari.

Yep. I think that merc has so many little flicks and wings on it that if it's not at the front it's rubbish. Much like Red Bull used to be a few years back too. I wonder if the teams would be better designing their cars to run well in dirty air and then if you're at the front it's all bonus performance :)

Hopefully that's what the new aero regs are going to fix but then again when you look at the cars of the late 80s, those wings were simple and people still won by tens of seconds. I can't understand why a bit of ground effect isn't the whole solution to this. Get rid of the plank to let them have more ground effect and therefore need less wing. I'm no aerodynamicist though!

Ground effects was banned on safety grounds. What happened to Gilles Villeneuve and others played a roll in this. But Porsche proved it could be safe with the 956/962. I think the current concern with ground effects is, if the cars are already this fast without ground effects, their cornering speed will only increase and you will push the drivers too far in physical demands. Drivers being drivers will push and push like Gilles and when it lets go the result is played out on live TV.
