Chernobyl [HBO]

Post by Duke »

Anyone else watching this Docu-Drama series?

Have watched the first 2 episodes of the 3 released so far & its bloody good.
I remember a lot about it when it happened in my teenage years, especially the concern about the potential affects it could have world-wide.

More fascinating is listening to the podcast with the writer about each episode.
These go deeper into some of the events depicted & the decisions made on creative licence. Especially which events are factually included & which were excluded for the sake of the narrative.
The podcast is audio only so can be easily found via podcast capture apps & on YouTube.

Highly recommended!!!

A few peeps at work have been raving about this.
The interesting thing about it for me is that Foxtel has streaming rights for it now but linear broadcast rights don't kick in until a few weeks later (I thought watching was watching!)... ahh the dark arts of the legal eagles...
I heard they tried the Russian accents at the start but then went back to natural...

I watched one of those Mega Engineering type shows about them building the dome. Was excellent.

Also, it made the Grand Tour thing of them driving through it seem like a crock of shit. People are working there. Driving through is no big deal at all.

I'm going to give it a watch but that sort of stuff bothers me more than it should. Just hearing English accents in the trailer was annoying me. Like Kevin Costner's lack of accent in Robin Hood.

It was actually a concious decision to revert back to English after they tried Russian & found the actors were over emphasising it, detracting from the story as the audience focussed on the accent not being quite right.
From my perspective, it is a very multicultural cast so their naturally varied accents using abrupt English sentences as you would expect it to be in Russian works really well.
Don't let it being in English put you off from watching as it, in my opinion it is too good to not give it a go.

I’m really enjoying it. The accent thing was not even a thought until I saw this thread.

The lead scientist dude was good in The Terror too

It is great, I do wish it was actually in russian and subbed. However I don't think it takes anything away from the story.

It's a good show. I was in high school when this happened and I remembered the possible radiation cloud heading over Eastern Europe to Sweden on the news. We knew it was bad but it's hard to comprehend.

If you can find a Guy Martin show where he went there, it's worth a look too. Some places he was only allowed in for 20 seconds! It's still screaming hot and will be for thousands of years.
EDIT:
Our Guy in Russia - he was there in the 3rd episode

I watched the first episode and it'd very good, but the English accents do annoy me, I think mainly because they did such a good job of making it look like the bleak 1980's Ukraine.

Continuing on with the all things Chernobyl theme, apparently someone (Ukrainians!) started stealing these slightly glowing leftovers from the disaster.

I felt the same thing with the first episode, but from the second episode onwards it hasn't been an issue for me.

What a great program with great performances. Chilling. Believable cast of real-looking people. Had nightmares last night after watching the last two episodes. Was thinking how the Trump/USS John McCain nonsense has real soviet undertones. Its the sort of ignorant stupidity that helped make Chernobyl happen.

I was also thinking this morning how shit it would be if it was US-made and filled with chisel-jawed heroes and beautiful women - how would the yanks have cast the scientist Khomyuk, played by Emily Watson for instance?

Oh I thought it was only 4 episodes - they could have finished it up after fading to black with the pregnant woman who had visited her radiated husband Vassily.

I've seen the first four and it's one of the best bits of TV I've ever seen. It's infuriating to see how the basic mechanics of that political system caused so many issues.

That was the best mini series I can recall seeing. The Podcast certainly added to it as well.

A couple of things. I did not know the other 3 reactors were all chugging away the whole time. And the helicopter crash was real.
