Thanks Darren & best wishes Kev.
I love this track but once again the F1 product needs to change for me to get excited enough to watch it...

Serious question, even as a Lewis fan are you really finding it hard watch because the results are always the same or because there's no real fight at the front?Duke wrote:

I've lost interest in some categories in the past even though my favourite driver or rider is always winning purely because of the lack of competition. I'd rather see a great battle and see my favourite driver lose than see a boring race that they won. First and foremost I'm a racing fan, a distant second is my team or driver winning.

I was a little the same when Schuey was so dominant but I still watched religiously as in many cases he still had to battle rivals or reliability.
Also back then the cars were just more interesting & violent compared to today's appearing calm & easy to drive (which I know they are not) but it just doesn't come across in the broadcast.
They appear to just sit in the cockpit playing playstation, it has all become very stagnant.

Yep, same here. Best wishes Kev.StanDaam wrote:Cheers Darren for standing in for Kev and hoping everything goes well for Kev's dad.
Yeah there's something in that. Even in the tedious days of Schuey's dominance, the drivers would at least get out of the car looking like they'd done some work. You just don't see that any more.Duke wrote:Also back then the cars were just more interesting & violent compared to today's appearing calm & easy to drive (which I know they are not) but it just doesn't come across in the broadcast.

And I'd even say the same about the cars. Because of all the reliability rules, it never feels like cars are pushing the extremes of performance either. When half the cars wouldn't finish it makes you think they were all skirting along the line of what was possible, and sometimes going too far.
So ultimately, it feels like we're watching a couple of dozen blokes well within their physical limits, driving cars that are well within their engineering tolerances for two hours. Perhaps that's why it's not exactly thrilling these days.

Re: 2019 FORMULA 1 GROSSER PREIS VON ÖSTERREICH
I'm not sure if I'm being nostalgic or not, but the reliability (or lack of) is one thing I think I miss. I remember back in the 90's etc that you were on edge until they actually crossed the finish line, you just didnt know if the car was going to explode on the last lap (Hakkinen/Spain around 2001?).
It was bad enough when reliability got so good where you could watch to the first pit stops and be 95% certain that whoever was in the lead after those would go onto win. Nowadays it pretty much whoever is leading after the first corner will go onto win as the team gives leading driver priority (fair enough as well) on all pit calls, I guess at least Ferrari manage to keep it interesting with being intent on ruining there chances with bad calls.

Yeah, although I criticise Vettel for regularly making mistakes under pressure, without them there would be barely anything to talk about in terms of the WDC

Re: 2019 FORMULA 1 GROSSER PREIS VON ÖSTERREICH
Thanks Darren.
Sadly my dad passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday evening.
I'll be raising a glass with the F1 on Sunday thinking of him. His eyesight was fading and he didn't necessarily know all the drivers these days but he always asked me who won the race and what it was like. We often saw the first race of the season together as well as any race that was on when I was home.
I hope it's a good race this weekend!
Thanks for your best wishes.

Sorry to hear that Kev. Having known you for close to 2 decades he must have been a good bloke because he raised one. In his honour I'll also toast him sunday night when the race starts. What was his drink of choice?

Re: 2019 FORMULA 1 GROSSER PREIS VON ÖSTERREICH
Could be a good race thanks to the mixed up grid and potential for broken front wings in the last corner
Only LeClerc from pole and Grosjean from 11th are starting from their qualifying positions after all the grid penalties.
George Russell qualified in 19th, got a 3 place penalty for impeding but will start 18th.
Hamilton, 3 place due to impeding Raikkonen in qual.
Magnusson, 5 place penalty for a gearbox change.
Russell, 3 place due to impeding Kyvat.
Nico Hulkenberg 5 place due to engine change.
Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon rear of grid for having used too many power unit elements.
