Why are kerbs on modern race tracks now wider than the cars, which are themselves quite a bit wider than they used to be? I can't think of what triggered their gradual embiggening.

Because with the single row of kerbs, you can keep 2 wheels on the track and 2 over the edge of the kerb. With double width kerbs, you (generally) can't. The 2nd set is normally much more aggressive than the first as well, further punishing the drivers. Having been over the new double-kerbs at Phillip Island, they bloody hurt in a superkart

But they're effectively doing that anyway, so making the kerbs bigger doesn't solve that.

I get that it gives the car and driver a rattle but that doesn't seem to affect their lap times.

I'm guessing there's a reason not to do this but it seems a row of gravel or sand or something would slow the car down without creating a massive ramp.
