Since buying a sailboat I have become more interested in sailing and sailboat racing. Like car racing, I am most impressed by endurance racing. There is no greater endurance event than 70 odd days at sea on your own racing around the world.
The 2020 race started a few days in France and they are heading south towards Cape of Good Hope. Currently straight into a ex-Tropical Cyclone.
As with all sports these days there are some great ways to keep an eye on the race:
- Official Site
- Alex Thompson - One of the favourites
- Alex's tracker is the best
Some of the other competitors also have websites. I'm particularly hoping that Pip Hare makes it as she is so genuinely excited just to be in the race.
The Start
Pip Hare had an AWESOME start
Alex Thompson trying to function after 3 days with no sleep !
Anyway, I am enjoying it and will post updates over the next 2.5 months. Anyone else keeping an eye on it?

Re: Vendee Globe 2020
Oh man... soo much has happened on this race and they haven't even made it to cape town. Events like these are amazing.. just to see what it does to people...
Alex Thompson and Hugo Boss had to do major repairs..
Pip is going nuts.. crosses the equator
Then she pushes too hard..
And then this.. Alex & Hugo Boss are out.. the disappointment is obvious.
And to top it off.. Kevin Escoffier has had to abandon ship due to water ingress! 4 skippers have turned to his last position to rescue him!

What did you pick up Pix and what did you call her?
I will always have a spot in my heart for sailing, I was almost raised on boats. We would go sailing every weekend from when I was born till I was 12 when my parents devorced.
We started with a Usual and ended up owning a few South Coast Magnums, dad would buy a blank hull from the builder, fit it out and flip it a year or two later for a new one.
I use to race Holdfast Trainers and Cadets. Crewed on a few Fireballs and owned a A-Class cat which I raced from 9-12yo. That thing was a weapon and I use to take friends out for additional ballast when the wind was up.

Re: Vendee Globe 2020
After 2 months of racing they are heading up the Atlantic on the run home.
45,000km into the race and there are 9 boats within 400km of the leader! Incredibly, only 30km separates the first 2 boats.
Going to be an amazing finish.
