Re: 2020 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix

Post by Big Kev »

After Romain Grosjean’s horrific accident at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo has shared his disgust at TV Directors for showing continuous replays of the crash on the world feed.

“I don’t want to comment too much on the race,” he told Ziggo Sport.

“I want to express my disgust and disappointment with F1.

“The way the incident of Grosjean was broadcast over and over, the replays, it was completely disrespectful and inconsiderate for his family, for all our families, watching.

“We are going to [be going] racing again in an hour and every time we look at the tv it is a ball of fire and his car is cut in half.

“We can see that tomorrow. We don’t need to see that today.

“For me, it was entertainment and they are playing with all our emotions and I thought it was pretty disgusting.

“Hopefully, some other drivers have spoken up but if that is not how we all really feel I will be very surprised.”

The incident was top news on all local websites here. People love drama, and particularly when the person walks away.

I kinda agree with Danny, but people want to see that. I can understand why he didn't want to see it

You know you're old when your going to be watching a 3rd generation driver from the same family... :yikes:

Glad to hear Grosjean is expected to be released so quickly too...

Put George Russell in it. Williams can drop in their backup driver.

Then Dan Ticktum can take George out after he gets annoyed that he got lapped.

Romain Grosjean has spoken for the first time about his escape from a shocking crash at the start of last week’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
Grosjean said he was reminded of Niki Lauda’s crash during the 1976 German Grand Prix, which left the Austrian world champion with severe burns.

“I saw my visor was all orange and the flames around me,” Grosjean told TF1 and LCI in an interview. “The accident of Niki Lauda came to mind. I didn’t want to end up like that. I had to get out for my children.”

He said the crash was unlike anything he’d seen in a film. “Even in Hollywood, it does not exist,” he said. “I have never seen a crash like that in my life.

“I stayed 28 seconds in the flames but it seemed much longer, as I tried to get out of the tub three times. After this accident, I’m happy to be alive.”
“To get out of the seat, I was able to remove my seat belt,” he added. “The steering wheel was no longer there, [it] probably flew off during the impact.”

One of Grosjean’s boots also came off during the crash. “In the end, my hands were burnt and I had a big sprain, I thought I had broken my foot.”

I thought the same. You do wonder a bit if that's the brain filling in some gaps that weren't there. I'd just be thinking.... get out! Not thinking of Niki Lauda and your kids and lots of other things.

I have not been in that position, but I know from a couple of scrapes scuba diving, when the shit starts to go down, time slows right down. Also, thoughts are so much quicker than explaining them.

He might have done some boneheaded things on the track before, but I have a lot of respect for him after watching that. I cant imagine he will race next weekend with his hands still in that shape. Did I notice his foot in a boot as well?

Absolutely. There are lots of accounts of similar things but I think your brain expands on those in retrospect to some degree. I remember reading something once that when you recall an incident several times you're no longer remembering exactly what happened, you're remembering the last time you explained it and you do start to expand more and more but that's just a psychology thing of the brain wanting to explain the situation as much as possible.

Looking at the amount of bandaging on his hands I honestly can't see him being able to drive next weekend. If he wants one more go in a car I'm sure the team will let him do a friday praccy somewhere or a testing day just to have a better final image of his time in an F1 car.

Yes memory is very imperfect, each time you recall something it's not like you are accessing some store of data but your brain essentially recreates what happened each time.

Mind you Martin Brundle said in the Sky coverage this weekend that the cameras on the car were running the whole time and he'd seen the footage from the one facing the driver and Grosjean did everything that he said in the interview.

The cameras survived that? Bloody hell.

Then again, humans are soft and fragile and one of them survived it so I suppose it's not that surprising. I guess I'm actually impressed the camera mounts survived it :D

Dont know how factual this is but it seems like a good deconstruction of the accident.
