Yep, impressive to top the times in your first session with a brand new car and no real prep.

It's worth stating that Mercedes have said Bottas' car was damaged quite early in the session so we'll see what happens in FP2. Either way, it's not a great start for him psychologically.

Bottas messed up in FP2 as well. Damaged the car again and all 3 laps on the soft tyre in the qually simulation were DQ'd for being off track so his best time was on the hard.

Bottas, like Hamilton to a degree, is on a hiding to nothing here.

He is expected to out shine Russell. If he doesnt, well, he doesnt look great.

To a lesser degree, the same for Hamilton. If Russel does well, everyone will say "well that just shows the car is so good anyone can get results". If he doesnt perform, "what can you expect from him in 1 race".

It could be like when Max got thrown into the Red Bull and won his first race. Chuck a brilliant young driver in a quick car and see just how good they are.

The biggest problem Russell has is that Sunday is often the worst day of his weekend. His starts have been rubbish and he's made some big mistakes in the races despite not being under a huge amount of pressure.

It's great though. They should do this a couple of times per season - pick a random driver and pop them into the championship leading car

With only 2 days to adjust, and having to wear a size 10 shoe instead of his size 11 to fit in the car he's done an amazing job.

Grosjean won't be racing at the last event.

Mercedes are prepared to give Romain Grosjean a test in one of their cars to close off his Formula 1 career.

He says he does not want the accident to be the last time he drove an F1 car.

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: "If we were allowed and nobody else in the universe of teams he has raced for will do it, we would do this."

Happy for Sergio but I feel so bad for George. Drove perfectly, made passes in the Merc which a certain other driver doesn't seem able to do. Oh well, at least he got some points and a FL to boot. Hopefully he gets another chance.

That one race was like the whole MotoGP season. Take the good guy out and they all fall over themselves trying to win.

Brilliant race.
So gutted for Russell. He's had a brilliant weekend and really showed up Bottas. How much tighter would the championship be if he was in that team against Hamilton. A real talent and a future champion.

Great win for Perez though. Albon will be thinking that's him done for now. I saw the F2 post-race interviews and Tsunoda pretty much said he was about to be announced somewhere in F1 (probably Kvyat's seat) and you have to think Perez would be good with Max as an odds on point scorer.

It's really tough for Red Bull as they really want drivers from their own program and Checo is also closer to the end of his career than the start so whilst he's in the car they're not developing one of their own drivers. Still, a lot of points have gone begging this year.

Would have been a fairytale win for Russell, but he proved himself at least. Good send off for Perez if he doesn't get a drive next year. Sainz and Riccardo would be disappointed as well. They got burned taking a chance on the earlier VSC.

The track ended up being better than I expected with passes getting done in 4 different spots.
