I saw the thread title, then I saw which subforum the thread was in which made the thread title a lot worse.

That audio stream is amazing. Everyone seems so cool.

Would the pilot have any idea the engine was on fire? Presumably they can't physically see it from the cockpit (?).

No they can't but almost certainly they would've been told by one of the cabin crew.

I bet that engine cowl made one hell of a sound when it hit that ute. Whao indeed!!!

There are sensors and automatic systems all over those things. I'd be very surprised if the pilot was not aware of fire and/or engine failure almost instantly. There would have been massive vibration, loss of engine speed, disturbance to oil and fuel pressure and loss of electrical circuits. All those are made as redundant and detectable as possible.

The failure of the engine casing is a pretty big concern as the possiblity of high-speed debris flying out and compromising the airframe or fuselage is increased. Perhaps the failure of the body work around the engine was sacrificial in that respect (to absorb the high energy event as much as possible).
