Monitor vs TV for sim rig.

Post by norbs »

Just wondering if I buy another 49" monitor, or get a 50" 4K TV on the sim rig. it will only be used for racing, and maybe flight sims. I wont be sitting at it doing work or anything.

Something like this is half the price of the 49 curved monitor

Probably the only thing would be refresh rate and contrast.

That particular model supports 60Hz Motion Rate but you might also want something that supports Freesync/G-Sync

This review talks about gaming performance.

If I was tossing up, I would be thinking about these 3 things when it comes to a tv vs a monitor

Pixel density/fidelity sitting soo close
aspect ratio
refresh rate

Being that TV's are 4K, I think Pixel density isnt a problem, I cant say ive sat 50cm away from a 55" widescreen to know if it works.
But tbh the big things I would worry about is aspect ratio and refresh rates is likely more of a problem.
Refresh rate looks like it might be solvable with the right tv looking above, but I think having a large 16:9 TV might be a bit funky for a puresim rig.. but likely able to be overcome

I did a bit of a google, looks like with FOV you could likely fix a few things.. but I dont know it just looks a little funky to me.... feels like your playing on a playstation vs a proper rig

Dare I say it... as you can clearly see, the FOV is an issue when using a single TV so unless you going to stump up for triple TV sets stick with monitors. :p

Also I'm not entirely sure but don't most decent smart TV's now come with a gaming mode or equivalent to account for the higher refresh rates for gaming?

Latency/input lag is a concern with TV's, especially for simracing. There used to be a few sites around that measured that on most tv's and monitors. With a big screen I think you'd want 120/144Hz refresh as well.
