Australia's crazy weather

From this side of the world at least it feels like there's a non-stop stream of catastrophic weather hitting Australia these days. Hope everyone is ok.

How many "once in 100 years" floods have you had so far in 2022 - three?

We haven't had flood where I am, but we had 4 days of nonstop rain which is very unusual where we are. Winter is usually our driest part of the year.

Yeah its been crazy, We got flooded in the late early in the year floods. My house didn't flood in 74 or 11 so it was surprising to say the least, had about 30cm through downstairs.. ive never seen that much rain in short amount of time in my life, especially after a crazy week of rain.

Since then it feels like it has rarely stopped raining..

Said on the news last night that Sydney had more rain the last 4 days than London gets in a year! 700mm or so!
Stay safe guys.

Fark that much! I knew it was a lot but a London's worth. Bonkers.

No wonder you don't hear a peep from that hippy charlatan Flannery anymore.

Just a normal winter here in VIC.
It's just we haven't had a "normal" winter for decades.
But yes QLD & NSW is not typical for them.
Really feel for those who have been displaced & lost home & prized possessions.

Yeah, because this is completely normal!

The poor bastards on the north cost... "Taree, in the Mid North Coast of NSW, has registered its heaviest daily rainfall on record, clocking 305mm between 9am Wednesday and 9am Thursday."

Here's what's happening this end. We might see 40 degrees in the UK for the first time ever next week. Britain is not built for that kind of nonsense.

Brutal when you're not acclimatized to it. I bet the humidity is high over there as well which is what really gets you.

Drink lots of water, stay out of the sun.

I suppose you're in the Canavan/Abbott camp of "burn more coal"?

Flannery was trying to point out that things were going to become dire. And that is exactly the road we are heading down. His predictions of water shortages might yet come to pass, but hey, never let a chance go to have a go at a hippy hey Jamo?

Start freezing ice blocks etc now mate. Another good one is freezing damp towels for 20mins or so.
Going for a drive during the middle of the day using the AC in the car, shops with AC. Stay out of the heat mate.

Luckily for me I'll be at work on the hot days and we have aircon in the labs but I think it might struggle as it's dealing with the heat of the equipment and the heat from outside too. But I'd rather be there than at home. Although I bought an air con unit 18 months ago and I wish I'd done it sooner because it's brilliant at home on these hot days.

It's 28 degrees here now and I'm sat in my home office and it's fine (it's a converted garage). It usually keeps pretty cool in here until about 4pm when it starts to ramp up so I might just start an hour earlier for the next couple of days.

Alternatively it's 35 minutes each way on a sweltering bus to go into the city office which does have aircon, as well as the additional benefit of after-work beers... :)

I remember before I went to the UK I used to laugh at 28 being "hot" but yeah to your durbster the UK isn't built for heat.. god nothing had airflow and the tube was like walking into a furnace

Yeah, when I was in the UK it hit low 30s and it was stiflingly warm. Felt more like a 40 degree day back home.

Outside temp at the top. Distance from the sun at the bottom :D
Aluminium paddle shifters were too hot to touch but I'm glad I specced cooled seats!
The engine temperature was half way to normal and I'd literally just started it up!

Drink lots of water guys and avoid the sun in the heat of the day. Oh and go bare foot to the mail box. You'll bust some sweet moves across the concrete if you have any.

Hard to imagine this happening over there. It's becoming a familiar story all around the world unfortunately.

Yeah it did hit hard although luckily only for a couple of days, for now anyway. The heatwave is still hammering parts of Europe so it might not be done with us yet.

Forecasters thought we'd see 40 here but probably not until 2050, which is a little alarming.

I've never been too bothered by heat but when it leaps 15 degrees in 24 hours there's no time to adjust. We only have one fan in the whole house, and like pretty much all British homes, we don't have aircon. Bearable for a couple of days but not particularly pleasant.

Tried a few of the tips too - the cold towels are good.

Hot water bottle in the freezer is good. 1/3rd full, let the air out and freeze it. Stays solid and cold for hours. Then you can sit on the sofa with it behind your neck, under your feet, under one arm etc. Just needs something around it like a tea towel to dull off the chill a bit. You can also lay it on the bed 20 mins before you're going in there and you have a lovely cool patch to lie in.

I got an aircon unit last winter. Best money I've ever spent. No point trying to buy one now as they'll all be sold out so I got it in January when the stores had loads. You just need to do a bit of research with measuring the room size and working out the BTU's you need to get enough cooling. Just by way of example, on the really hot Monday I got home from work and my living room was 29.5C. After 40mins with the aircon on blastic 18C air in to the room it was down to a much more pleasant 26.8. Then I just kept running it on and off for 5 mins or so when ad breaks were on the TV to keep it nice during the evening.

I use an ice brick wrapped in a tea towel the same way. If I'm too hot at night and can't get to sleep I'll sometimes run cold water over my hands and feet. Gets the core temp down pretty quickly.
