Some great selections there, I think Woodsy has nailed it though
Von Ryans Express, first saw that at the movies when I was about 9 years old, jeez more than half a century ago. I fell asleep after standing for God Save the Queen, (yes, we did that back then) & woke up in time for the credits. Now I fall asleep on the lounge instead.
Most Steve McQueen movies
I don't know where I'm going but I'm on my way!

Although, you were pretty amazed that I slept through Terminator 3 at the movies that time. We had a romantic date in the fancy lounge theatre and I slept through the whole thing.

I still can't believe that after doing Von Ryan, Frank Sinatra was first choice to play Dirty Harry!! But he turned it down as he didn't like the idea of the film's criminal being a bit of a kiddy fiddler.
Just can't imagine him doing the famous lines from that film!

Re: Recommend me a pre 1980s movie.
Few obvious ones here but
Jaws
Alien
Planet of the Apes
Where Eagles Dare
Capricorn One
The Time Machine (original not the bobbins remake with the guy from Neighbours!)
First Men in the Moon
Towering Inferno
The classic Airport disaster movies Airport, Airport 1975 (best one), Airport 1977 and Airport 79 Concorde (although that one is a bit pants)
Hatari
Westworld
The Dam Busters
The League of Gentlemen (good 1960 crime caper with Jack Hawkins)
Two Way Stretch (brilliant Peter Sellers jailbird comedy - Some fantastic character casting in it from the days when the right actor played the right part)
Jason and the Argonauts
The Wild Geese
Right on 1980 - The Final Countdown with Kirk Douglas (superb cinematography of the F14s)
Right on 1980 - A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square (One of David Niven's last films and based on a true bank robbery)
Right on 1980 - North Sea Hijack (Roger Moore trying to stop Anthony Perkins blowing up oil rigs)

Re: Recommend me a pre 1980s movie.
MORE!!!! Sorry, pre-80s is a bit of a sweet spot for me and films
Could scare yourself shitless with the original Omen.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is an absolute classic.
Guns of Navarone (and the sequel Force 10 from Navarone with Harrison Ford, Robert Shaw and Barbara Bach)
Superman 1+2
Smokey and the bandit
Duel
Poseidon Adventure
Papillon
The Gumball Rally (like cannonball run but less comedy - great though)
Enter the Dragon
Forbidden Planet
Death Wish (1 yes, 2 maybe, not sure I'd bother going further!)
Gauntlet (Clint E)
All the Connery Bonds
Kelly's Heroes
The Eagle has Landed
Day of the Jackal
Juggernaut
(goes without saying) Magnificent 7 and the Great Escape

Re: Recommend me a pre 1980s movie.
Here's another - A Night To Remember: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051994/
The first (?) film about the Titanic. We watched it a few years back because the boy was learning about ship at school, and I figured it'd be pretty mild given the period it was made.
It was surprisingly good. Obviously what effects there are won't blow your mind but they keep them to a minimum so it's not too distracting. It's very tastefully done.

These titles bring back memories of going to rent VHS tapes as kid with the parents. I remember the old man laid down $200 for 2yrs of unlimited rentals from some little independent rental place. Holy shit he made sure he got his money's worth. We were in there twice a week and picking up 3 movies each time.

Re: Recommend me a pre 1980s movie.
Ok, so I have watched a few now.
Have you blokes watched many of these lately? Boy, they are slow going.
Escape from Alcatraz. I think it was 6 minutes in before any dialogue. I know it isnt 2001: A space odyssey, but boy.
Von Ryan's express. Not bad, but again, pretty slow. And i think maybe a sign of the times, but overacting. Jesus.
Where Eagles Dare has probably been the most enjoyable so far. I really had to sit up and take note of all the double crossing going on.
As far as the non classics go. Something About Mary is still terrific fun.
And i didnt realise I hadnt seen Dodgeball til I heard a podcast with Ben Stiller. Corny as shit, but h a lot of laughs. And perfect to watch while tracks are building.
I had a quick look at Poseiden Adventure, and nearly fell out of my chair when Lesley Nielsen popped up as the captain!
Still to watch.
Dirty Harry
Hellfighters
Woodsy and the argonauts
Magnum Force
Sudden Impact
The Abyss
The Dead Pool
The Enforcer
The Good the bad and the ugly
The Guns of Navarone
The Longest Day
The Pink Panther
The Battle of Britain.

Re: Recommend me a pre 1980s movie.
Haha I almost said that about Alcatraz starting slow but thought it might have just been me .
So many films now are a constant barrage from the first second that I think it takes a bit to adjust to the pacing of older films. Once you're tuned in it's fine.
