There is a new format for the sprint weekend.

Friday's one hour FP1 will be followed by race qualifying, with the grid for the main event set unless any extra penalties have to be applied.

The Saturday sprint shootout will follow the same three-part format as traditional qualifying, with the reduced session lengths now confirmed as 12 minutes for what will be known as SQ1, 10 minutes for SQ2, and eight minutes for SQ3, with mediums mandatory for both SQ1 and SQ2, and softs for SQ3.

The sprint shootout sets the grid for Saturday afternoon's sprint race.

The points allocation for the sprint remains unchanged, with the top eight scoring on the basis of 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.

Penalties incurred in praccy or race qually will carry over to the F1 race.
Penalties incurred in the Shootout qually will carry over to the Sprint Race.
Penalties incurred in the Sprint Race will carry over to the F1 Race.

Well that's all nice and clear then :melt:

OMFG, so much for the KISS Principal.
Why oh why did they stick to a 3-part Qual for the Sprint Race, would be much more exciting if it was a proper shootout.
Either all in for 15mins or do it like all other categories with a single car, 1 lap do or die.
I wonder how fans, especially the younger generations will take to this?

Agree.
A 1 lap shootout in reverse championship order would be pretty cool. As soon as the first car is on it's lap you can start the next car out of the pit lane and the car that's finished a lap has to keep up 90% of its speed so they don't then get caught up. Easy. All be done in 20 mins.

So whats everyones thought on the format now? I thought it was kinda stupid going in.. but honestly I'm ok with it. End of the day, its basically just a two race weekend. For us in Aus we get an extra qualifying during the earlier evening our time vs a snoozefest of a practice which is good.

I was worried that people with no chance of making the top 8 wouldn't bother even trying, but that didn't seem the case last night. Maybe on a track with less overtaking it might be worse.

I'm OK with it as the Sprint Race no longer affects the Sunday grid.

But I still think the Sprint Qual needs to be changed to a different format. I just can't comprehend a 3 stage Sprint Qual for a race that is only 1/3 the full GP, the SQ was as long as the Sprint Race.

As for the Race, was a snooze fest again.
But LMAO at the end when Ocon still had to pit, another debacle for F1 this season...

Do you guys get the Sky commentary? Ted saw that Ocon scenario coming well before it happened.

Forgettable race(s) overall. The only bit of light is that Perez looks up for the championship fight. I doubt he can really take it to Max across the whole season but at least it might make for some competition for the wins at a few races.
